One of two SVC volleyball teams in D-3 Regional Semi action Wednesday stays alive, with Westfall dropping a four set decision to West Lafayette Ridgewood, while Adena swept Alexander in three sets at Logan High School.
(26-1) Ridgewood 25-16, 22-25, 25-10, 25-13 over (21-4) Westfall
The (21-4) Westfall Mustangs fell to (26-1) West Lafayette Ridgewood in 25-16, 22-25, 25-10, 25-13.
After grabbing an early 5-2 lead, the Mustangs fell behind and never led again in the opening set. Westfall turned the tables in Set 2, grabbing an early lead and going the distance with leads of several points, before hanging-on for the 25-22 decision.
The next two sets saw the Generals break-away for easy wins and the match victory.
Ridgewood's tall front line of four players at 6'0 tall, was too much for Westfall along with strong back-row play from many of the same players. 6'0 sophomore Laura Crawford dominated with 22 kills and 15 digs. 6'1 senior Laura Frazee added 13 kills and a match-high 23 digs, to go along with 3 service aces.
Westfall was led by Amanda Curry and Hannah Phillips, each with 13 kills, while and Hannah Wallace added 8 kills. Phillips also had 5 solo blocks and 3 aces. Senior Kayla Tackett led the Mustangs defense with 21 digs.
The Mustangs, under first-year head coach Jessica Rodgers finish as SVC, sectional and district champs with a record of (21-4).
(20-6) Adena 25-14, 25-14, 25-15 over (11-14) Alexander
The Adena Warriors advance to the Elite Eight with a three set sweep 25-14, 25-14, 25-15 over Alexander Wednesday night.
Adena took advantage of repeated hitting and service errors by the Spartans in the opening set, and never looked back, never being in any real trouble all match.
5'6 junior Jenna Hutton and 5'7 senior Bridgette Scaggs led the Warriors with 11 kills each, while Karli Bower added 9 and Carissa Poehler with 7. Scaggs also had two solo blocks and 2 aces. Jenna Hutton had 3 aces, 15 digs. Bower had 12 digs and Natalee Jones had 11 digs. Setter Kirsten Dawson had 28 assists, 4 kills and 12 digs.
(11-14) Alexander was led by senior Sidney Arnold with 11 kills and 11 digs.
Adena (20-6) faces Ridgewood (26-1) at 2pm Saturday for the Division 3 Regional Championship.
The win for the Warriors, places Adena Coach Laura Smith in a tie with retired Archbold coach Char Sharp for fourth place on the state high school volleyball win list, with 617 career wins. Smith is in her 28th season at Adena.
Mary Tarko of Ravenna Southeastern is currently at the top of the list with 641 wins over 40 seasons.
Dan McKinstry of Wellsville is second with 640 wins in 36 seasons, the retired Don Conser of Salem High School is third with 620 wins, with Smith and Sharp tied for fourth.
