MLB Considering Dumping Traditional Alignments for 2020 Season

(New York, NY) -- Major League Baseball is reportedly considering dropping the traditional league alignments for the 2020 season.

USA Today reports the 30 teams would return to their spring training facilities in Arizona and Florida. Then, they would play games against the other teams in that state with no fans in attendance.

There are 15 teams training in each state and they would be split up into three divisions of five teams each. The designated hitter would be used by all teams for the season. The three major league parks in the two states would also be used for games.

The proposed alignment for 2020 would be:

Cactus League

  • West: Cincinnati, Cleveland, Chicago White Sox, L.A. Angels and L.A. Dodgers
  • Northeast: Arizona, Chicago Cubs, Colorado, Oakland, San Francisco
  • Northwest: Kansas City, Milwaukee, San Diego, Seattle, and Texas

Grapefruit League

  • North: Detroit, NY Yankees, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Toronto
  • South: Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Minnesota, and Tampa Bay
  • West: Florida, Houston, NY Mets, St. Louis and Washington
