Teays Valley Wins Opener 28-17 Over Cavaliers

Teays Valley traveled to Chillicothe and used a pressure blitzing defense and big plays to knock off host Chillicothe 28-17.

The Vikings started with a bang when Cam McDanel ran 53 yards on the opening play to the Cavs 8 yard line. McDanel took it over a play later for a quick 7-0 lead.

TV took advantage of a negative 1 yard punt by Chillicothe late in the first half. The Cavs were pinned on their three and a punt from the end zone wound up on the Cavs 2 yard line after going straight up in the air. Quarterback Love ran it in from there to give the Vikes a 14-0 lead at half.

Chillicothe played much better in the second half but two huge plays kept them from getting within a score.

On the Vikings first play of the second half they seemed to sneak sophomore Harrison Payne out to the sideline without any Cav seeing him. An easy pass from Love and an 80 yard touchdown made it 21-0.

Chillicothe marched inside the TV 10 but settled for a Crawford 25 yard field goal to make it 21-3. Again, it was Payne, as he returned the ensuing kick off up the middle for 90 yards and it was 28-3 still in the third.

The Cavs took advantage of a Viking fumble to set up Maxwell Lee’s 2 yard touchdown run still in the third quarter. Chillicothe finished their scoring on a 14 yard pass from Mason Doughty to Xavier Doss with 2:20 left in the game.

The visiting Vikings out gained the Cavs 317 to 166. Doughty did pass for 123 yards on 12 of 27 for the home team with Doss being his main target.

McDanel ran for 104 yards and a score and Love ran for a TD and threw for one for Teays Valley. Payne was the Viking spark with his 80 yard touchdown catch and 90 yard TD return.

Coach Doug Pryor was pleased with the Cavs fight and comeback after two big plays put them in the hole. Pryor is also hoping the coach’s adage of improvement from week one to week two comes to fruition.

Chillicothe will need it as they travel to Wheelersburg next Friday night.
