Chillicothe Council Hears About Hopewell, Moves to Pay Vendors

Council passed their only agenda item, an appropriation of more than $2.2 million for brought-forward purchase orders. Finance chair Anthony Phillips pointed out that it is for vendors not yet paid, for services already rendered.

The Chair of the Parks & Recreation and Tourism Committee, Allison Henderson, said she had news on the effort to get the prehistoric Hopewell earthworks listed by the U.N. She spoke with the head of Convention & Visitors Bureau, Melody Young, that afternoon.

The nomination has been submitted at the state level, and will soon be on to the national level, and then UNESCO...with the hope that it will be wrapped up April of 2023. She said that is the common timeline for a listing like this.

Kathy Payne said since council could not get the city's AFSCME contract onto the agenda in time, it will be automatically in effect on the 27th. Council also went into executive session regarding "union contracts and negotiation."

In mixed votes, council twice failed to ratify two candidates for the Ross County Health District board. After the slate was voted down, Mayor Luke Feeney asked to vote on his appointments again, separately.

Former council member Ceil Corcoran and retired Ross County Coroner Dr. John Gabis each received the same 4 "no" and 3 "yes" votes again, at about 19:00 to 20:30 in council's Facebook Live video.

Council noted Saturday's death of former council president Bruce Arnold. Mayor Luke Feeney said he was a friend, dedicated to his office, and proud of the community. His comments are at 15:30 to 17:30 in council's Facebook Live video.
