Mound City Centennial Events Today

Our local National Park is commemorating its 100th birthday today.

Just north of Chillicothe is the heart of the Hopewell Culture National Historical Park, the Mound City earthworks. They became a federal park March 2nd, 1923.

Among other activities, one-hour park tours start at 9:30...and then at 2:30 is a presentation "Archeology Then and Now" by park Archeologist Bret Ruby. See the complete list below.

CENTENNIAL COMMEMORATION - Thursday, March 2nd, 2023

  • Mound City Tours at 9:30, 10:30, 11:30, 12:30, 1:30, 2:30 - Meet on the back porch for a Ranger-led 1 hour tour of the Mound City Group earthwork complex.
  • Atlatl Demonstrations every half hour 9:30-3:30 - See how American Indians hunted 2000 years ago! Located in front of Visitor Center.
  • Park Orientation Video every half hour 9:15-1:15 - Take a look at special displays around the auditorium. What's the connection to WWI Camp Sherman?
  • Don't forget to visit the Museum!
  • Archeology Then and Now at 2:30 pm - A Century of Writing Unwritten Histories at Hopewell Culture National Historical Park
  • Special Presentation by Park Archeologist Dr. Bret J. Ruby
  • Native Farming and Gardening - Find out what foods people of the Hopewell Culture were cultivating and eating. Discover how the park maintains
  • native plants to provide habitat and to show you where Hopewell earthworks once stood.
  • Team and Tools - See a display of the special equipment our maintenance team uses to care for the earthwork complexes preserved in Hopewell Culture National Historical Park.
