Basil Makes It Official, He's A Buckeye
Friday 07-03-2009 1:13am ET

Chillicothe High School placekicker Drew Basil has made a verbal committment to play football for the Ohio State Buckeyes. Drew made the decision following an official visit to the university Friday.

In an email to Clear Channel Chillicothe, Cavs Football Coach Bill Davidson, said "Drew informed me he has verbally accepted his football scholarship to become an Ohio State Buckeye beginning in the fall of 2010. His team mates, our coaching staff, and myself are very proud of Drew."

Basil received the offer from OSU a week ago Saturday. He'd been considering offers from Air Force, Kentucky, Cincinnati, & Purdue.

Basil has been an All-Ohio and All-SEOAL South selection in Football and Soccer. He's also on the Cavs Bowling Team.

CAVS HOLD JULY OFFENSE CAMP

The Chillicothe Football Cavaliers conducted an offensive camp Wednesday at Herrnstein Field.

One of the big chores for coach Bill Davidson will be replacing Caleb Knights, a four year starter at quarterback. Knights will be on the field for the Air Force Academy this fall.

Davidson says there are four candidates vying to call the signals for the Cavs this fall. Davidson reports linebacker Shay Netter (Sr.) will give a more physical presence behind center. Speedster Casey Oates (Jr.) who has the ability to get around the corner, first timer Marcus Dunn (So.) and strong armed freshman Luke Barnes have been working at the position. Chillicothe added Unioto graduate Ricky Shifko as its quarterback coach.

Despite graduating a large group of starters, Davidson is pleased with the returning letterman along the offensive and defensive lines and has a great deal of confidence in the abilities of his kicking game with Drew Basil (Sr.) who made news last weekend when Ohio State came calling with a scholarship offer.

The Cavaliers will participate in five 7-on-7 competitions in July beginning next Thursday (7/9) at Herrnstein Field featuring Huntington, Southeastern, Unioto,  Waverly and Wheelersburg. Chillicothe will also travel to Westfall (7/11), Waverly (7/15), Paint Valley (7/17) and Jackson (7/31).

Two-a-day practices begin August 3rd. This year's Blue-White scrimmage and photo day will be the following Saturday, August 8th. The Cavs will square off with former Cavs coach, Bill Dennis, at London on August 12th, host Mount Vernon on August 14th and a final tune up with St. Charles on the 21st before the season opener with Hamilton Township on August 28th.

Tyler Vest Becomes A Dragon
Wednesday 03-25-2009 8:39am ET
Tyler Vest is the fourth 2008 Chillicothe Cavalier headed to play football in college.

After three years as a varsity defensive lineman, Vest will head to Tiffin University after graduation this spring. Vest's resume includes All SEOAL and All-Southeast

District honors for the 6'3" 278 pounder, who says he's eager to get started for the Dragons.

Tiffin finished 1-10 last season under first year coach David Walkosky, after seasons of 9-2 and 10-1 respectively.

Vest says he hopes to make an immediate impact at Tiffin, which may give him a chance to play right away.

Tiffin boasts other SEOAL talent on their roster already. Freshman linemen Alex Wallace from Logan, Ironton's John Pemberton and Gallia Academy's Dave Rumley in addition to former Gallia running back Dustin Winters, a junior.

Vest will major in Sports and Leisure Management.

Curt Smith to Throw for OSU
Thursday 02-12-2009 5:29pm ET
Before a crowd of nearly 100 family members and friends, Chillicothe's Curt Smith became a Buckeye.

The 2008 indoor state champion shot putter officially notified Ohio State of his intentions last week.

Smith had entertained an offer to join his best friend, Unioto graduate Randy Rhue, at Kent State. But then, the Buckeyes came calling during the Cavs football season last September.

Smith is eager to get back to throwing for the Cavs. Last season he set the shot put state record in a regular season meet, won the indoor state title on the same day the Cavs basketball team won their state title, and finished second in the state outdoor meet last June.

Smith is the first Chillicothe track & field athlete to receive such a hefty scholarship, and the first field event athlete in 10 years to attend a Division 1 college.
