Waverly Stops Chillicothe's Tourney Run, 45-43
Friday 02-26-2010 11:18pm ET
Waverly had a crucial 8-0 run midway through the game to gain momentum, and hold on for a 45-43 Sectional Championship win over Chillicothe Friday.

The win propels the Tigers into a District Semi-final against the Logan Elm/Vinton County winner at the OU Convocation Center March 5th.

The Tigers had two swings to gain momentum and overtake Chillicothe.

The first came after Cavs had built a 24-15 second quarter lead. In the final minute of the half, Waverly's Sam Johnston and Harrison Martin hit two baskets to close the gap to five at intermission. Then, to start the third quarter, the Tigers got two buckets to pull within 24-23.

The second run began after the Cavs' Jalen Ragland nailed a three pointer with 2:22 in the third period for a 33-28 Chillicothe lead. To close out the third, Waverly scored the next six points, including a buzzer beating put back by Martin, to earn their first lead since the game's first 3:11 at 35-33. That margin increased to four points, 37-33.

Chillicothe could never retake the lead.

Ragland cut it to 40-39 on back-to-back 3's, but the Cavs couldn't get over the hump.

In the final seconds, Chillicothe found an opportunity to tie, but the final shot of Michael Turner's career rimmed out as time expired.

It wasn't the Cavs' only chance. The game was locked at 42-41 for nearly four minutes, as Chillicothe went empty on four consecutive trips.

The Cavs had 17 turnovers to Waverly's 10.

The Tigers outscored Chillicothe 17-10 over the game's final 10:22.

Turner was held to just 7 points, while Ragland led the Cavs with 16. Zach Johnson and Tyler Manion scored 6 each, Isaac Beverly 4 and Landon Beverly and Malik London 2 apiece.

Jake Kretzer poured in 20 points and Martin added 12 more for the double figure scorers.

The Cavs finish 13-8 and runner-up to Ironton in the SEOAL.

Chillicothe loses three seniors, Michael Turner (the last member of the 2008 State Championship team), Landon Beverly and Timmy Dunbar.

Cavs Beat Unioto 60-23, Meet Waverly Friday Night
Wednesday 02-24-2010 9:54am ET
The two clubs were snowed out last week, but Chillicothe and Waverly will meet this Friday night in the Sectional Championship game at Southeastern High School.

Chillicothe used pressure defense and quickness up the floor to win their D2 Sectional Semi-final with Unioto 60-23.

The Cavs (13-7) took command early as Michael Turner set the tone, scoring 14 of his game high 20 points in the first quarter.

Chillicothe led 32-12 at intermission and 43-19 through three periods.

The Cavs hit 62% of their shots from the field (25-40) while holding Unioto to 10-for-38 night (26%).

Unioto's Devin Willard was the leading scorer for the Shermans (8-12).

Jalen Ragland poured in another 18 points for the Cavs.

In the night's first game, The Tigers beat Jackson 50-36.

For more than three quarters, the Ironmen kept pace with 2nd seeded Waverly, but they ran out of steam as the Tigers outlasted the Jackson attack, 50-36.
Early on, Jackson jumped out to an 11-6 score. The Tigers wiped that lead away quickly.

The Tigers chipped away at their deficit to pull even at 14 on a shot by Derek Roback at 3:49 in the 2nd.

The two teams swapped leads three times before the half 17-16, Waverly.
Jackson continued to work the perimeter game and took a 3-point lead on a four point play. Morgan Dobbins nailed a straight away three and was fouled, hitting the free throw to give the Ironmen a 27-24 lead.

Waverly erased that deficit with four free throws to take a 28-27 lead early in the 4th. Roback hit another jumper to go ahead 30-27.

Waverly began to take control from that point on, outscoring Jackson 13-3 for a 42-30 lead with 3:22 remaining.

Roback led Waverly with 19 points and Jake Kretzer added 17 for the double figure scoring for the Tigers.

Tickets for the game are available at the CHS Athletic Department from 8:30am-3:00pm, cash only.

Cavs Tangle with Shermans Tonight
Tuesday 02-23-2010 11:39am ET

The Cavaliers face the Unioto Shermans tonight for the first time since the 2005 post season. The Cavs won that night, 74-56 in Gary Kellough's first year with Chillicothe.

The Cavs have gone 75-21 since that last meeting, a season that was stopped by Dante Jackson and the McClain Tigers.

This season, Unioto has battled to an 8-11 record and 7-7 in the Scioto Valley Conference. Coach Matt Hoops says the Shermans have "... no big scorer, just about five guys averaging around 9 points per game."

Sometimes, that's all you need.

Recently, the Shermans have had a rough road to sled, finishing the year with Piketon (14-5) and Washington Court House (18-2) and now Chillicothe (12-7).

The game is scheduled for an 8:00pm tip-off, following the Waverly-Jackson game (6:15pm).

Fans attending the games will get two for the price of one. Larry Jordan Gymnasium at Southeastern H.S. will not be cleared following the first game.

Coverage on 1490 WBEX begins around 7:45pm.

Cavs Take Logan 67-60, Post Season Begins Tuesday
Saturday 02-20-2010 6:06pm ET

The Chillicothe Cavaliers battled from a 12 point deficit to beat Logan 67-60 in a snow make up game Saturday.

The Chieftains hit 66% of their first half shots. Mason Mays and Patrick Angle combined for 13 of Logan's first quarter points for a 17-9 lead. Logan increased the margin to 26-14 early in the second quarter before the Cavs began whittling away.

Chillicothe pulled to within three points by intermission, trailing 35-32 behind a flurry of goals by Tyler Manion and Malik London. Manion hit seven straight points to get the Cavs within 26-21 and London closed out the half with three more shots from within the paint. Manion and London lead Chillicothe with 17 points each.

Chillicothe earned it's first lead of the game midway through the third quarter on a Zach Johnson basket to make it 42-41. Logan regained the lead 45-44 before Jalen Ragland nailed a 3-pointer for a 47-45 edge in the final seconds of the period. The Cavs poured in 67% of their shots in the third while the defense forced seven Logan turnovers in the quarter.

The Chieftains tied the game at 47 free throws to end the third quarter. Chillicothe worked for the final shot, but T.J. Colegrove stripped the ball from Michael Turner as the Cavalier guard was going for the shot. Colegrove heaved the ball toward the Logan basket from 65 feet away and Turner was called for a foul. Colegrove sank two of three free throws for the 47-47 tie.

To open the final period, Chillicothe took command early, outscoring Logan 12-2 for a 59-49 lead. Manion, Johnson and Turner teamed to hit 12 of 14 free throws to sew up the 67-60 victory.

Four Cavaliers scored in double figures, in addition to Manion and London's 17 apiece, Johnson added 12 and Landon Beverly 10. All were season highs for each player. Turner (18.7ppg) had 5 and Ragland (10.9ppg) scored 6 to round out the scoring.

Chillicothe (12-7/11-3 SEOAL) opens post season play at Southeastern High School Tuesday with Unioto. Tip off is 8pm. Pre-sale tickets are available at the Athletic Department office during school hours. Cash only.
