Cavs "Better" Despite 53-45 Loss to Raiders
Saturday 02-13-2010 11:04pm ET
Cavs Coach Gary Kellough was pleased with his team's effort in a 53-45 loss to Reynoldsburg Saturday night.

After falling to Warren 43-42, Kellough was livid with his team. But following the post game chat with his players and again in the shoot around on Saturday, Kellough said the Cavs responded well to what he and his staff were seeing on the floor against Reynoldsburg.

The Raiders tout two of the best guards in Central Ohio in Morehead State bound Kevin Gray and Brandon Rushton (college undecided), who average 25 and 17 points per game respectively. Gray dropped 20 of his 26 in the 1st quarter as Reynoldsburg took a 22-14 lead. Gray his five NBA length three-pointers, had a a standard field goal and a FG-free throw combo in the game's first 8 minutes. Rushton finished with 13 points.

Chillicothe trailed by seven and nine points for much of the game. In the third quarter, the Cavs' Michael Turner lit up the nets for 11 of his game leading 27 points to pull Chillicothe to 47-40.

The Cavs opened the 4th quarter with a bucket to cut the deficit to five, but could get no closer.

As a team, the Cavs shot 44% while the Raiders (aided by Gray's near perfect shooting in the first half) managed to nail 54% from the field.

The Cavs cut down on their turnovers (9) while forcing 13 by Reynoldsburg.
Jalen Ragland hit for 9 points, Tyler Manion had 5 and Malik London added 4 points and 4 blocked shots.

Chillicothe enters Sunday's Division 2 Southeast Tournament drawing at 10-7.

The Cavs will play three games next week to close out the regular season, hosting Waverly Tuesday, Jackson Thursday and then heading to Logan Saturday afternoon.

Warren Steals 43-42 Win at Chillicothe
Friday 02-12-2010 10:54pm ET
The Warren Warriors came to Chillicothe on a mission.

In his pregame interview, Coach Blane Maddox said the Warriors had alot of pay back on their minds. "They've taken alot of things away from us that we wanted with championships, sectional, districts and league, we want to get to that level and be able to beat them consistently we try to work at it everyday to get better at it."

Playing without an injured Austin Cunningham, who blistered the Cavs for 30 points a month ago in Vincent, the Warriors walked away with 43-42 victory at Hatton Memorial Gymnasium.

The Cavs had a 7-point lead in the first quarter before the Warriors closed out the period trailing 10-5. Then Warren outscored the Cavs 15-6 as Chillicothe went on a scoring drought for more than three minutes. The effort put the Warriors ahead 20-16 at the half.

To open the second half, Chillicothe forced a 20-20 tie and matched Warren basket for basket before regaining the lead 26-24 midway through the third period.

Warren turned a couple of Cavalier miscues into points to take a 5 point lead at 33-28. Chillicothe got those points back over the final 1:42 to earn a 33-33 tie through the third quarter.

Michael Turner hit a three-pointer at 5:11 to lift the Cavs ahead 36-34. Chillicothe maintained a lead until the 2:49 mark when Tyler Manion fouled Warren's Jeremy Hastie on a three point attempt. The sophomore hit three straight field goals to tie the game at 39.

The teams exchanged leads three times before Brandon Fivecoait hit a layup to put Warren ahead 43-42 with 1:13 left.

Chillicothe had three more shots in the final minute, but failed to score again.

It was Warren's 9th win in their last 10 games, and snaps Chillicothe's 3 game winning streak.

Clay Ellenwood and Fivecoait finished with 12 points each to lead Warren (13-5/7-4).

Turner paced the Cavs (10-6/9-3) with 14 points, Malik London had 13 points and 8 blocked shots and Jalen Ragland hit for 11 points. Tyler Manion and Zack Johnson chipped in two points apiece.

Warren forced 14 Cavalier turnovers while committing just nine. They also made out at the charity stripe, making 15-of-19 to the Cavs' 7-of-8. From the field, Chillicothe shot only 36% to the Warriors' 43%.

Chillicothe returns to Hatton Gym Saturday night with former OCC foe Reynoldsburg, who entering play Friday was 10-6 on the season. Coverage on 1490 WBEX and Horizonview Channel 298 begins around 7:30pm.

Cavs Pull Away from Marietta for 63-48 Win
Friday 01-29-2010 10:49pm ET
The Chillicothe Cavaliers ended a two game losing skid with a convincing 63-48 victory over visiting Marietta.

Unlike last Friday, the Cavs got off to a cold start, shooting just 29% from the field and trailing 16-10. A week ago, they raced out to a 29-6 lead on Ironton, but let the lead slip away.

In reverse fashion, Chillicothe rallied from an 18-10 2nd quarter deficit to close out a 15-6 run for a 25-24 edge at halftime.

Jalen Ragland hit a 3-pointer with 2:24 before the intermission to tie the game at 20, and hit another for a 23-22 lead. Malik London gave the Cavs the lead for good on a shot with less than a minute remaining before the half.

After the break, the Cavs just got better.

Chillicothe jumped out to a 44-33 lead through three quarters. Despite having 20 turnovers to Marietta's 12, the Cavs built a 16-point lead at 49-33 off a 5-0 run to start the fourth quarter.

Michael Turner led all scorers with 23 points. Ragland hit for 13 and Malik London had 10 points with 6 blocked shots.

The Cavs out-rebounded Marietta 31-18.

Chillicothe (8-5/7-2) resumes SEOAL play with Portsmouth Tuesday night at Hatton Memorial Gymnasium. The Trojans rallied from a 34-30 deficit to beat Jackson Friday night 73-57.

NOTES:Michael Turner closed out the game hitting 8 consecutive free throws... Chillicothe hit 16 of 21 from the line... Ironton improved to 9-0 with a 55-53 nail-biter at Warren... Marietta beat the Cavs in the Junior Varsity contest in 4 OT's 59-58. 5'4" Mitchell Gearhart hit a free throw with 1.3 seconds remaining in a game that lasted two hours.
Cavs fall to Canton Timken 59-42 at oSU
Saturday 01-23-2010 6:39pm ET
Following Chillicothe's meltdown against Ironton Friday night, one had to wonder how the Cavaliers would perform against powerhouse Canton Timken (12-2) in the Ohio Scholastic Play-By-Play Classic at Ohio State 16 hours later.

Despite losing 59-42, Cavs coach Gary Kellough was pleased with his team's effort.

Michael Turner hit the game's first basket, but Timken scored the next 10 points.

Malik London finished off a Cavalier rally to tie the game at 12 before the end of the period. Timken closed out the first with a 6-0 run.

Chillicothe momentarily gained a 26-25 lead on a scoring binge by Jalen Ragland. The 6'5" junior scored 11 of his team-high 17 points in the second quarter as the Cavs went into the locker room trailing 28-26.

The Trojans slowly began to pull away, outscoring the Cavs in the third 16-10 for a 44-36 lead and eventually won out in the fourth.

Timken had 10 more shots in the second half than did Chillicothe. The Cavs hit just 7 of 18 shots in the half, 18-of-53 (34%). The Trojans forced 20 Chillicothe turnovers while committing only 10.

Coach Kellough said after the game he felt his team showed improvement and was happy with the way the Cavs played following such a difficult loss the night before.

Turner added 12 to Ragland's 17 points. Malik London had 8 rebounds with his 5 points and 7 blocked shots.

Chillicothe gets back to SEOAL action Friday night with Marietta at Hatton Memorial Gymnasium.

NOTES: Jalen Ragland was recognized by the Classic committee as the Cavs MVP... Logan Elm dropped a 55-41 decision to Westerville South before the Cavs game. The Braves' Adam Blake was tabbed MVP.
