Cavs Slam Pickerington 69-47
Thursday 02-17-2011 2:41pm ET
Jalen Ragland was on hot and Pickerington Central couldn't cool him off.

The Cavalier senior guard poured in 22 of his game-high 31 points by halftime leading Chillicothe to a 69-47 win over the visiting Tigers.

Central held an early 6-2 lead before Zach Johnson hit a bucket and Malik London tied the game with one of his three slam dunks to tie the game at 6. Johnson hit another layup and Ragland drained his first points of the night on back-to-back threes to complete a 14-0 run. The Tigers' Carisa Levert hit a three to close out the quarter with the Cavs on top 16-12.

Ragland added a pair of free throws and another combination of three pointers for 14 consecutive Chillicothe points and the Tigers simply couldn't catch the Cavs after a 10-0 run at 28-18.

London scored 14 points as he and Ragland teamed up for six dunks on the night.
Johnson finished with 12 points. The Cavs got a combined 12 points from Max Corcoran, Tyler Manion, Isaac Beverly, Miloje Djacic and Madison Simmons.

The Cavaliers made 52% of their shots while holding Pickerington to 39% shooting.
Turnovers were fairly even (Chillicothe 24, Pickerington Central 15) while the Cavs won the rebound battle 39-27.

Chillicothe (16-3) has its final home game Friday night with the Jackson Ironmen.

Cavs Claim Share of Third SEOAL Crown
Saturday 02-12-2011 11:48am ET

Chillicothe's final two field goals at Warren, were three-pointers. The first by Tyler Manion. The second, a shot by Jalen Ragland with four seconds remaining gave the Cavs their claim to their third SEOAL title with a 44-43 victory.

Ragland's shot was the dagger that took a probable win from the Warren Warriors.

Warren (15-2, 8-2) had a 42-38 lead with 42 seconds on the game clock. That's when Manion raced the ball up the right sideline. The Warriors defense reacted to a possible pass to Ragland. Manion drained the
three-ball at the 33 second mark to pull Chillicothe to 42-41.

A Chillicothe foul sent Warren's sharp shooting guard Austin Cunningham to the charity stripe with 17 seconds left. Cunningham made the first but missed the second. Grant Venham grabbed the rebound but while
he was falling out of bounds, his attempted throw in hit behind the backboard. Chillicothe got the ball back and 13 seconds later, Ragland hit the shot heard 'round Washington County.

The Cavs took a 10-8 lead in the first quarter, but Warren outscored them 15-8 for a 23-18 halftime lead. Cunnigham paced the Warriors attack with 8 consecutive points.

Ragland then put the Cavs on his back with 15 of his game-high 24 points in the third as Chillicothe turned a 5 point deficit into a 33-29 lead.

Chillicothe (15-3, 10-1) shot 32% for the first half, but managed 9-for-20 in the all important second half effort.

Manion finished with 7 points, Zach Johnson had 6, Miloje Djacic added 4, Malik London 2 and Max Corcoran 1.

Venham led Warren with 16 and Cunningham had 12.

Chillicothe finishes up SEOAL play next Friday with Jackson, but first will host former OCC rival Pickerington Central at Hatton Memorial Gymnasium this Tuesday.

NOTES: Two of Chillicothe's three losses have come when they've scored 43 points or less. The Southeast District tournament draw is Sunday at Jackson High School.

HEAR THE PRE-GAME CEREMONIES & GAME PODCAST

Two eras of Chillicothe basketball came together at Hatton Memorial Gymnasium Friday night.

While fans and former Cavaliers renewed old acquaintances, the current Cavs cranked out a 57-30 victory over Gallia Academy bouncing back from a 52-42 loss at Portsmouth Tuesday.

Jalen Ragland paced the Chillicothe attack with a 21 point night. Malik London scored 11 and Tyler Manion 10 as a stifling defense forced the Blue Devils into 28 turnovers while racing out to a 23-7 halftime lead.

Neither team scored over the game's first 4:05. London sank a basket at 3:55 to finally get the ball rolling and Ragland dropped in a 3 pointer for a 5-0 lead. Gallia answered with back-to-back baskets by Ethan Moore including a buzzer beater for a 5-4 game through the first period.

The Cavs got hot to start the second quarter as Jalen Ragland scored 11 straight points as Chillicothe went on an 18-0 run.

While the Cavs (13-3, 8-1) earned a win the night belonged to the elder Cavaliers.
Coaches, players and support staff of the 1980-81 season enjoyed a 30 year reunion stepping back in time through stories and catching up.

Eight players made it back home. Only Doug Halsey waxed most nostalgic, wearing his 1981 varsity jacket. Halsey was joined by fellow forwards Pat Bouillion and Mike White, guards Jeff Doles, Bruce Caplinger and Rob Hitchens and centers Mike Kempton and Garin Veris.

Cavs coaching legend Tom Cuppett was also in attendance with team managers Butch Helmick and Butch Atteberry and student managers John Wilhelm and Mark Colley.

Each player received with a copy of their team photo, presented by current team members.

Also part of the ceremonies, Cavs Coach Gary Kellough was recognized for his 400th career victory, a 71-57 win over Hillsboro last week.

Honoring the 1980-81 Cavaliers
Friday 02-04-2011 6:32am ET

During the Tom Cuppett era of Chillicothe basketball, fans new of only one place to be on game night, Hatton Memorial Gymnasium.

Through the 1970s, Cuppett led teams won numerous District titles and had teams that were going beyond the Southeast District in tournament play.

The one team which stood out was 1980-81. That season the Cavaliers were undefeated marching into a meeting with Canton McKinley with a 22-0 mark. It was the most successful season in Chillicothe basketball prior to the Cavs 2008 state title.

Friday night, members of the 1980-81 Chillicothe Boys Basketball team will gather on the same floor they dazzled fans and frustrated opponents.

Organizers say as many as 16 individuals associated with the team will return to Hatton, led by CHS Athletic Hall of Fame members Coach Cuppett (2001) and Garin Veris (1993).

Chillicothe City Schools Superintendent Roger Crago was an Assistant Principal at CHS at the time. Crago said it was electrifying anytime the Cavs took the floor, home and away.

"I remember at Groveport, there was a breakaway and Garin was at half-court you
knew he was going to dunk it... you had the support of the community... even at the away games because we always filled the gyms."

Chillicothe was ranked 3rd in the then Ohio Associated Press Class AAA poll and Canton McKinley was the number 1 team heading into the Regional matchup, a team with the future Ohio State backcourt mates in Ronnie Stokes and Troy Taylor.

CHS Principal Jeff Fisher says Friday's event will link up yesterday with today.

"We're striving for that same accomplishment that this team earned and the '08 team earned. It's kind of a past meeting the present..."

The team will be recognized between the Junior Varsity and Varsity games with

Gallia Academy (approximately 7:15pm).

Crago adds the memories of that team are still alive, even when he sees some of the players around town today.

"It was a group of hard working young gentlemen, even nowadays when I see some of them today, like Jeff Doles and Rob Hitchens, and think about watching them play... they worked hard at it."

The ceremony has been orchestrated by Dustin Cousins, who's tireless efforts have helped some former Cavaliers find their way back home.

"It's an important day," said Fisher "we feel this is a way to not only honor the team but to bring the community back inside Hatton Gym and make sure they understand that we didn't have a great team just in 1981, we have a great team right now."

A private reception for the team, cheerleaders and families will be held after the varsity game.

#5 Cavaliers Fall 52-42 at Portsmouth
Wednesday 02-02-2011 3:33am ET
HEAR THE GAME PODCAST

"Now I don't have to sneak into Chillicothe the back way to my in-law's."

Those were the words of Portsmouth Coach Eugene Collins after his Trojans ended a 14 game losing streak against DII's #5 Chillicothe, 52-42 Tuesday night.

It was the first SEOAL loss for the Cavs (12-3, 7-1) this season.

Chillicothe Coach Gary Kellough praised his team's effort to erase a 12 point second half deficit, but when the Cavs were teed up twice in the game for losing their cool, Kellough said it hurt them.

The first technical came with less than two minutes left in the first period. Chillicothe had taken a 10-7 lead on a basket by Malik London and seconds later the 6'9" center made an outstanding defensive block at the Portsmouth end of the floor. London was charged after reacting to the block. Portsmouth's Wayne Evans sank the free throws  and on the ensuing possession, Tre Underwood gave Portsmouth an 11-10 lead.

The Trojans held the lead until Tyler Manion knotted the game at 39 with 4:49 remaining.

The next two minutes were the turning point of the game.

Portsmouth had closed out the first half on a 16-10 run increasing their lead to 29-22 at halftime. Chillicothe regained the lead at 16-15, but 6'5" post player Dion McKinley sparked the Trojans by hitting three 3 pointers down the stretch for the margin at the intermission.

Zaide Whitley punched in another 3 pointer to open the second half and McKinley knocked down a layup for a 34-22 Trojan lead.

Following a Cavalier time out, Jalen Ragland hit from outside the arc and added another two point to cut the deficit to seven.

Manion and London teamed to close the gap to 39-33 to end the third quarter. The Cavs scored off a couple of Portsmouth turnovers, first by Isaac Beverly, Ragland and Manion made a dazzling drive around Andrew Bendolph from mid floor down the right side of the lane, hitting reverse layup left of the basket for the tie.

Then, the wheels fell off the wagon.

Bendolph (held to one point) dropped in a 3 pointer for a 42-39 margin and followed it with a field goal inside the paint to increase the lead to 44-39.

Kellough said the game was still manageable at that point, but added "we started getting away from our game plan and playing too much individual play" which led to one-and-done possessions.

Evans was fouled on a drive to the basket with 2:23 remaining. That's when the second technical came into play.

Coach K said after the game, the Cavs need to learn to keep their focus when the game is on the line.

Evans proceeded to drain two free throws followed by the technical free throws for a nine point swing and a 48-39 Trojans lead.

Neither team had a stellar night from the field. Chillicothe made just 35% of their shots to Portsmouth's 41% and where the Cavs managed 1-for-7 from beyond the arc, the Trojans had 8 bombs hit their mark.

McKinley lead all scorers with 19 points and Evans' 13.

For Chillicothe, London finished with 16 points. Ragland hit for 13, Manion and Beverly had 4 each, Zach Johnson 3 and Max Corcoran 2.

Portsmouth is 11-4 and 6-2 in SEOAL play.

Chillicothe returns to Hatton Gym Friday night with Gallia Academy.

NOTES: The 1980-81 Cavalier team which lost to Canton McKinley in the Regionals will be honored between the JV and Varsity games. After the game, fans can meet with the players at a reception in the Larry Cox Memorial Gym... The team's 22-1 record is second only to the 2008 state championship team's 25-2 ,mark... In the Cavs' three losses this season, Chillicothe's been held under 50 points.
