When they last met, Grove City came to Chillicothe and left the court at OU-C knowing a rising power was building in Ohio's First Capital.
It was the winter of 2006 and a Cavalier team which had knocked off Dublin Scioto had just sent their Ohio Capital Conference foe back to Grove City with a humbling 69-59 loss behind 39 points by sophomore Humpty Hitchens. It righted a double figure loss a few weeks earlier at GC.
History behind them, Greyhounds Coach Greg Waits is anxious to see the Cavaliers again. The two will meet in the nightcap of the inaugural Grove City Tip-Off Classic. Westland and Brunswick will open the Classic at 6:00pm.
"We have a very good group of kids, we're deep, we play about 10 kids which is a good thing for our style of play... and they work hard everyday."
Grove City and Chilllicothe will both have the same questions about there clubs heading into their first contest of the season.
Waits says "We got a talented team but how tough are we gonna be? If we're tough the way we hope we're gonna be tough we're gonna have a great season. But if we're not tough, then we could struggle at times."
The Grove City Greyhounds are coming off a 15-7 season and with four returning varsity players, there were many roster spots available for the junior varsity team which comiled a 19-1 record.
"We had a great group of JV kids... those kids have brought a lot of energy." And Waits credits his assistant coaches Jim Alman and Jim Raisor. "The did a really good job with them".
But the Dawgs' coach also knows Chillicothe will come to play and the one Cavalier who catches his eye is four year starter Zach Johnson. "We know Zach Johnson's a heck of a player for them and we've got our work cut out with him."
Coverage of the Cavs and Greyhounds begins around 7:45pm on 1490 WBEX now on 92.7 FM.
