Fairfield Union stayed with the Cavaliers and then pulled away for a 46-40 victory Tuesday night.
Chillicothe had a 25-21 lead in the 3rd quarter after Tommy Bolte nailed a 3-pointer and Zach Johnson hit a layup to put the Cavs ahead, but it would be a short lived lead.
Sam Green drained a three from the corner to cut the deficit to 25-24 and Jordan Barr hit a bucket to go up 26-25. Trevon Harris popped a 3-ball to put Chillicothe back on top before Barr closed out with four free throws to secure a 31-30 lead through three.
"We hung around for two and a half quarters... we need to get four quarters" said Coach Drew Meister.
His Cavaliers couldn't get to the free throw line, managing just two trips. "We didn't put pressure on them to guard us in the paint area (to force foul shot opportunities)."
The fourth quarter belonged to the Falcons. Johnson led off the period with a bank shot and the Cavs were up 32-31. That’s when Barr went to work. The junior point guard hit long ball to go ahead 34-32 lead and Thomas Green followed up with another three-pointer to jump out to five point margin.
The Cavs’ last chance to tie came after a basket by Pierce Knisley to pull Chillicothe within three with just over five minutes to play. Knisley launched what would’ve been a tying three pointer, but it was one of the Cavs 15 misses from beyond the arc.
Chillicothe was 3-of-18 from three point range while the Falcons hit 4-of-9. "The three ball, it's not going down... if you can't open it up, then you're gonna have to force the issue a little bit. You'd open it up (the inside game) if you hit some of those threes" added Meister.
Johnson led the Cavs with 16 points and Bolte had 10. Barr and Thomas Green had 15 each for Fairfield Union (2-2).
Chillicothe (0-5) will host Jackson Friday night at Hatton Gym. Jackson lost to Wellston 56-46.
NOTES: The Cavs won the Freshman and JV games. The JV's won in overtime. It was encouraging for Coach Meister who said "If you look at our Freshman bunch, they capitalized on some opportunities tonight and did a tremendous job. Our JV guys, they're the guys we're going against each day in practice, winning in overtime. There's some guys who are hungry, that are vying for some opportunities... and we've got some guys at the varsity level, they're getting challenged everyday and getting pushed. So, all we can do is keep geting more practice time and that's a positive."
