Arledge, Holz, Netter Speak; Buckeye Basil Spring Update

Three football Cavaliers Troy Netter, Tyler Holz and Keagan Arledge announced their plans.
Netter is headed to Division III Otterbein who plans to use him at wide receiver. He'll also see some familiar faces when camp opens this summer. Former Cavs Kent Parker, Jordan Benson and Ron Smith. "Ronnie's gonna be a big help because he's playing wide receiver just like I am... Kent, always a familiar face and JB. I mean, we'll have friends everywhere."Netter will be a business major.
Holz, who's going to Division III Defiance, says he'll miss the Friday night atmosphere at Herrnstein Field. "High school football is probably one of the purest things you'll ever see and if you're a part of it, it's something that'll stick with you through a lifetime. You meet friends, and honestly, the guys they'll be family, brothers the rest of your life. It's a new chapter, I get to continue my career and I am blessed enough to continue that."
Holz will be majoring in Criminology and Psychology. Keagan Arledge is headed to Washington and Jefferson College in Washington, Pennsylvania to study Veterinary Medicine. "It's been my life long dream. I've always loved animals and science, it's been my choice forever." Arledge says getting to play sports at Washington and Jefferson is a plus "... going there for academics and the opportunity to play football... and hopefully swimming."Arledge became the 40th Cavs football player to head to college under retired coach Bill Davidson.Davidson's 35th player, Drew Basil, just completed spring practice at Ohio State.
As an early enrollee, Basil had the opportunity to get on the field quickly. He participated in the Buckeyes' Kick Scrimmage and in the Spring Game nailed two PATs, handled kickoffs and hit a 47-yard field goal.  Basil said kicking in the 'Shoe is pretty awesome. "It's an amazing feeling... the closed end just seems like it's forever and ever away."
He adds there's plenty of backdrop for taking aim, "We (kickers) have alot of targets to pick from through the uprights. You have the flag poles up on the top, the flag pole right down the middle and I guess even sometimes there's the security guards up on the towers that you can pick a spot and aim for."Basil's biggest thrill of the spring game wasn't making the kicks, it was walking onto the field and hearing the Buckeye faithful. "The crowd just just went crazy. And seriously, the bumps on my arms just popped up as soon as they started cheering."
The Buckeyes open play with Marshall September 2nd.

Holz, Netter, Arledge Headed to College

Three more Cavaliers are heading to college to play football.
Ceremonies for Tyler Holz (OL/DL) Defiance College and Troy Netter (DB/WR) Otterbein College will be held Monday at 2:45pm and Tuesday at 2:45pm for Keagan Arledge (WR/DB) Washington and Jefferson.
Netter joins former Cavs Jordan Benson, Kent Parker and Ron Smith at Otterbein.
Earlier this year, Shay Netter signed with Toledo and Drew Basil signed with Ohio State.

Basil Boots 47-yarder in OSU Spring Debut

Chillicothe's Drew Basil helped the Gray to a 17-14 victory over the Scarlet in Ohio State's spring game.
Basil, who graduated early from CHS for early enrollment to OSU, had an active debut in Ohio Stadium. Two point after conversions, three kickoffs and nailed a 47-yard field goal to give the Gray team a 10-7 4th quarter lead with 10:34 remaining.
Just before halftime, the Gray coaches gave Basil a shot at a 60 yard attempt, however the holder mishandled the snap forcing the kick to fall well short.
The Gray scored first after Terrell Pryor and the Scarlet team failed on their first possession. Pryor answered the Gray TD with a pass to Dan Sanzenbacher to knot the score at 7-7. The Rose Bowl MVP was 8-12 for 108 yards and the touchdown before leaving the game in the first half.
The Scarlet team went ahead 14-10 on a 4-yard td run by Bo Delande with 4:48 remaining. Then Kenny Guiton hit Turian Washington on a 45-yard strike to put the Gray up for good. Guiton and Washington connected on a 28-yard pass for the game's first score.
Ohio State opens the season September 2nd at Ohio Stadium with Marshall. Kickoff will be 7:30pm, maybe by freshman Basil.
Former Cavs Defensive Coordinator Dies at 69

The architect behind the defense that led Chillicothe to its first playoff appearances in 1986 and 1987, Art Jones died last week.
Jones passed away on a golf course in Florida. He'll be laid to rest in Huntington, West Virginia today.
Jones had coaching stints in Chesapeake, London, Middletown and Chillicothe. Those Cavalier teams were 35-7 including two playoff appearances.
Art Jones would have been 70 on April 14th.

Shay Netter Headed to Toledo Rockets

Shay Netter made it official Monday, he'll be a Toledo Rocket.
Chillicothe's leading tackler the past two seasons (323 the past three seasons), Netter will be a preferred walk-on at the University of Toledo.
Netter said making a choice between Ohio University and Toledo was tough. He visited UT six times on unofficial visits and fell in love with the campus. But he also enjoyed Athens. Netter added the Toledo coaches made him feel at home.
Eventually, numbers helped Netter decide. Ohio has a surplus of linebackers, Toledo, in need at the position, signed four linebackers on National Signing Day, but Netter finds himself third on the depth chart due to Rockets' the low numbers.
Toledo plays on ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU and ESPN360 this season, beginning with Arizona at the Glass Bowl.
The Rockets are also scheduled to play the Buckeyes at Ohio Stadium in 2011.

Meeting: Improvment to Herrnstein Facilities

 There's a community meeting scheduled for Monday March 1st to discuss the the future of Chillicothe High School's athletic facilities. The primary focus will be on plans for improvements to Herrnstein Field and the Fieldhouse. Among the issues to be discussed, fundraising efforts, identification of facility needs, and the prioritizing of short and long term plans.  2007 Chillicothe grad Clay Beeler has been named Honorable Mention on the Don Hansen Football Gazette All American Team. Beeler tallied 113 tackles to lead the West Liberty Hilltoppers to a 13-2 season. The Hilltoppers won 11 straight games before falling to California, Pa. in the NCAA Division 2 National Playoffs. Beeler is now a two-time All-American Linebacker with back to back 100 tackle seasons at West Liberty. He'll be entering his senior Senior season next fall at West Liberty (Wheeling, W.Va.). Among Beeler's stats, two games with 16 tackles, 73 solo tackles, 5 QB sacks, 13 tackles for loss and an interception. He was also named 1st team All-WVIAC at Linebacker, 2nd team Daktronic and Football Gazette All-Super Region 1 teams. Cavalier fans will see a steady diet of games in September and October.
Herrnstein Field will host five games during a six week period.
The first game under new head coach Ron Hinton will be played at a spot he's familiar with, Hamilton Township, a former Mid State League foe.
The final six weeks will be in the newly realigned SEOAL. The league season begins September 24th with Portsmouth. It's a home game, so fans hoping to see the new Portsmouth facility will have to wait yet another season. The schedule also has return trips to Gallia Academy and Logan, spots the Cavs visited in 2009.
Ironton comes to Chillicothe in the home opener on September 10th, however it's no longer a league game. The Cavs also face former league foe, Athens and Marietta returns to Herrnstein Field for the first time since October 2007.
Just two of the teams reached the playoffs in '09 (Ironton and Logan). The opponents' combined '09 regular season records of 57-43.

National Signing Day for college football has a handful of Scioto Valley athletes giving their intentions to universities. Among them, Chillicothe's Drew Basil with Ohio State University. The Cavs kicker was a 4 year starter at CHS, scored 172 points during that period and is the Chillicothe school record with a 50 yard field goal. Basil, a four sport athlete, was named All-Ohio Football 3 times. He's earned 12 Varsity Letters: 4 football, 4 soccer, 3 bowling and 1 track. Basil is enrolling at OSU in March making him eligible for the Buckeyes Spring Practices. Basil is the first Cavalier since Shane Clark (1995-1996) to play for the Buckeyes. There was a longer gap. Prior to Clark, there hadn't been a Chillicothe play for the Buckeyes since Vic Stottlemeyer in the late 1960s. The Cavalier kicker is one of 18 recruits for the Buckeyes.
