It's a shame one of the two teams had to lose. Both teams entered the game in search of their first victory.
Unfortunately for Cavaliers fans, it was their team.
Chillicothe saw a 21-10 lead evaporate as Portsmouth rallied for two touchdowns to take a 24-21 lead.
A 30 yard field goal by Noah Valentine with 48 seconds left in regulation tied the game at 24.
Through the first 12 minutes, the two teams would remain scoreless, as Chillicothe's Donald Turley intercepted the first of three interceptions by the defense. The interception closed out the first quarter, but the Cavs were forced to punt.
Portsmouth was the first to draw blood.
Mason Jordan ran 14 yards for the game's first score to cap a 9 play 61 yard drive.
The Trojans got the ball back again and drove into Cavalier territory, but the Cavs' Luke Barnes interception a pass and returned it 94 yards for a tying touchdown.
Portsmouth closed out the half with a 23 yard field goal to take a 10-7 lead at intermission.
Chillicothe gained their first advantage of the game when Jalen Jones scored on a 15 yard run to complete a 72 yard drive on the opening series of the second half. Ryan Mathis connected on a 26 yard pass to Jones to the Portsmouth 15 to set up the score at 9:19 in the 3rd quarter.
The Cavs's Corey Wagner grabbed a tipped pass to give Chillicothe the ball back.
The Cavs caught the Trojans by surprise with a fake punt which Zach Johnson took 32 yards to the Portsmouth 15. Mathis put Chillicothe ahead 21-10 just before the period ended.
The Trojans countered with a 65 yard pass completion to L.J. Adams on first down. Adams slipped a Cavalier defender at the first down marker then raced another 55 yards after the catch. Javonte Edwards punched in a two yard run to cut the Chillicothe lead to 21-16. The Portsmouth attempt for a two point conversion failed.
With 8:35 remaining, the Cavs punted to the Trojans 32 yard line. A 21 yard run by Mason Jordan was the key play on a 68 yard drive to help Portsmouth regain the lead at 24-21.
The Trojans had nearly stopped Chillicothe's final attempt, but a personal foul on third and long aided in keeping the Cavalier drive alive. Mathis hit Adam Bixler on a 30 yard strike to the Portsmouth 10. The Trojans held the Cavaliers to Valentine's 30 yard field goal for the tie.
Portsmouth out gained Chillicothe 390 yards to 242.
Jalen Jones led the Cavs with 70 yards rushing.
Chillicothe (0-5) will play its fourth straight road game Friday night at Hillsboro (0-5). The Indians were 43-12 losers to Washington Court House.
NOTES: Overtime almost wasn't necessary. On the game's last play, Portsmouth's coaching staff was conveying to Mason Jordan to let the time expire. Instead, Jordan threw a pass in the flat that was nearly picked off by Luke Barnes. Barnes had a clear lane to the end zone... The 31-24 outcome was the first overtime in the history of the Chillicothe-Portsmouth series... Portsmouth leads the series 43-30-3... the Monroe's Collision big collision was awarded to Noah Valentine who with 48 seconds remaining calmly nailed a 30 yard field goal to send the game into overtime.
