The old adage has been, a coach learns the most about their team between games one and two.

The Cavaliers saw their squad win the second half of their opener at Hamilton Township last Friday 33-21, but that was after the Rangers jumped out to a 31-0 lead.

Following Tuesday’s taping of The Coaches Corner, Cavs Co-Captain Julius Lee described the first half sideline as “it just seemed kind dead, like there was no confidence”, then Lee reeled off a 63 yard run and brought the sideline to life. Lee regrets that he didn’t make it to the end zone “I’d like to score, that’s always my goal when I run the ball… next time I gonna score, that’s for sure.” The run set up the Cavs first TD of 2012, when Ryan Mathis hit Trevan Pennington on a 4 yard pass.

Co-Captain Ryan Milliken said the touchdown gave the Cavs a boost “We should’ve fed more off of it and kept wanting more… to help us on all three phases of the game and not just one.”

That would serve the Cavaliers well in facing Big Walnut Friday night at Herrnstein Field.

Cavs Defensive Coordinator Jeff Arndt said he took the loss to heart “We’ve always believed, if Ron (Hinton) scores 33, we win the ball game… “ but Arndt says the bright spot from Friday’s loss came in practice this week. “I like the way they came back… we’ve made a couple of (personnel) moves, I like the way we’ve practice. We have hurt pride and we’ve gotta get our pride back.”

Westerville Central held Big Walnut scoreless in their opener (27-0) last Friday. Arndt credits Central for being very good and added Big ‘Nut had problems of their own having lost the starting quarterback to injury in the scrimmage season and then lost their second stringer Friday night. “They were limited in what they could do offensively”.

The Eagles can’t be counted out. “Their coaching staff has been around a long time, I think we’ve got a good idea of what they’re going to do, I just hope we can stop it.”

Friday night’s coverage begins at 7:05 on 1490 WBEX-AM and the WBEX iheartradio app (Visit wbex.com and click “Listen Live”. The iheartradio app can be downloaded to most every device that has an internet connection).
