Chillicothe (1-5/0-1) returns to Herrnstein Field for Homecoming this Friday hosting Warren (2-4/0-1).
Both teams are coming off losses in Week 1 of the SEOAL season. The Cavs fell at Gallia Academy 20-7 while Warren dropped a 33-26 decision at Jackson.
If anything, the Warriors haven’t had trouble scoring points, averaging 28 points per game which Coach Andy Schob suggests is a two edged sword. “We’ve been getting better offensively, but defensively is where our biggest struggles have been so far, we’re making progress but we still have a long way to go where we want to go.”
Like the Cavs, Warren has been playing young kids in the trenches, “Our big kids are young and they’re still learning how to use their body and our more aggressive kids are smaller. So, up front we’re having a tough time and we do well for a few plays and then have a break down. We just have to be consistent.”
When defenses begin preparing for the Warriors, it starts with the 6-foot-2-inch 215 pound quarterback Dylan Leffingwell. Schob is happy to have Leffingwell on his side of the ball. “He throws the ball well and he’s started to run the ball… he had almost 100 yards against Jackson last week.”
The last two seasons, Warren has been more of a passing offense, but this season Schob says “We run more of a Wing-T, and we do run some spread (because of Leffingwell’s abilities).”
The Cavs found themselves in Gallia’s backfield several times last week and the Warriors coaching staff took notice. “We have to do a good job protecting. Chillicothe’s gonna be a handful defensively.”
But despite the Cavs attack, Schob adds “We have some decent running backs and our line is pretty good at angle blocking and working together to take some pressure off Dylan from throwing all the time.”
The two teams have another similarity neither are too happy about, giving up the football. For Chillicothe last week a fumbled return on a kickoff gave the Blue Devils extra momentum. Schob says knows how devastating that can be. “In two of our first three losses we had four turnovers, we definitely have to take care of the football and I’m sure they (Chillicothe) feel the same way.”
The Warren kicking game has served its team well this season. Chas Miller nailed had a school record 47 yard field goal last week against Jackson, so that should be a heads up they can rack up points from the 30 yard line in.
