The Cavaliers christened the new Obadiah Harris Family Athletic Complex with a 21-0 victory over Teays Valley Friday.
Pressed against deadlines to get the facility ready for the home opener, the organizers did not disappoint nor did the Cavaliers.
The first Chillicothe touchdown in its new facility was a Nate Rosenbauer 6 yard run with 1:01 remaining in the first half. The sophomore’s TD capped a 10 play 82 yard drive for the Cavs’ first score before intermission this season.
Facing a 3rd and long and fended out of the red zone, Chillicothe’s Daiquan Hall got a good bit of the yardage back and a Vikings’ penalty aided the play to keep the drive alive for the Cavs.
Teays Valley’s Steve Evans told the WKKJ Scoreboard Show “You can’t make those kind of mistakes against a good football team” speaking of untimely penalties. “We made some mental mistakes and they came at crucial times.”
Teays Valley had two opportunities to get on the board via field goal attempts but came way empty handed.
The Cavs got on the board again on a 2 yard run by Markel Cain at 8:33 in the fourth quarter. Chillicothe put the game away on Rosenbauer’s 18 yard run with 1:00 remaining.
The Vikings had one serious threat in the first half, but otherwise had difficulty cracking the Chillicothe defense. “Great job by our defense, second half they came out a shut ‘em down.”
The Cavs held Teays Valley to 132 yards offense.
Meanwhile, Rosenbauer and Cain combined for 150 yards on the ground.
Coach Hinton was pleased with the win but added “We gotta get the sugar in there for the win… but we’re making too many mistakes offensively right now… we turned the wrong way, we went the wrong way, but we had 21 and they had zero.”
The night featured an electric atmosphere surrounding the opening of the new facility and number of alumni back for the game.
Evans told his Vikings “it was a championship atmosphere type of a ballgame. Obviously they had a huge crowd… it was a hard hitting game. We have to learn from it.”
Teays Valley’s Travis Strawser had the most productive night on the ground, 10 carries for 40 yards and Tyler Primmer grabbed three passes for 29 yards.
The Vikings (2-1) prepare to open their Mid State League Buckeye Division schedule with Logan Elm next weekend.
The Cavs return to the SCOL for the first time since the 1930s. Chillicothe (3-0) head to Miami Trace (3-0) Friday.
