The Cavaliers put their series with Portsmouth to rest with a 57-27 victory Friday night to close out the 2013 regular season.
With the win, Chillicothe has secured a playoff spot, but the Trojans didn’t make it easy.
Prior to Friday, the Chillicothe defense had allowed just 58 points. But that stat didn’t seem to matter to Portsmouth as the Trojans touched the Cavs for 27 points.
Sky Oliver tossed two if his three touchdown passes in a stretch in which the two teams swapped scores six times in the first half.
Oliver got the ball rolling with a 35 yard run to put Portsmouth on top at 6:07 to make it 7-0. Chillicothe answered on a 26 yard Ryan Mathis pass to D.J. Vinson.
Less than a minute later, Oliver found Isiaha Lisath on a 47 yard strike but missed the PAT. The Cavs drove 68 yards and Markel Cain punched in an 18 yard run to close out the first quarter with a 14-13 lead.
In the second quarter, Oliver hit Brandon Wedebrook to complete a seven play 72 yard drive and a 19-14 advantage. It was the last time the Trojans had the lead.
Nate Rosenbauer ran 42 yards to the Portsmouth five yard line before Cain walked into the end zone with 10 minutes left before the break. Rosenbauer crossed the goal line to lift the Cavs to 28-19.
One of the night’s more exciting plays came just before intermission. Carl Harris blocked a Trojans punt and Kyle Mays scooped up the ball at the Portsmouth 17 yard line and scored. Cain tacked on a two-point conversion and Chillicothe owned a 36-19 lead at halftime.
Chillicothe scored the next three touchdowns (Rosenbauer 1 yard run, Harris 26 yard run & Cain 9 yard run) to post a 57-19 lead. Oliver hit Khalil Lattimore on a 46 yard strike to close out the scoring.
Cain led all rushers with 187 yards on 21 carries and three TDs. Rosenbauer had 8 carries for 117 yards and two scores while Mathis tallied 73 yards on just 6 lugs.
The Cavs improved to 9-1 while Portsmouth finished its 2013 campaign 3-7.
The victory puts Chillicothe in the playoffs for the first time since 2008 when they fell to Logan Elm in the second round. The official announcement will be made by the OHSAA Sunday as to who and where the Cavaliers will play next Friday, but earlier speculation has Chillicothe heading to play Brookhaven (8-2).
