Tigers End Cavs Season in District Final, 2-0
Saturday 10-30-2010 9:17pm ET
Marietta attacked and attacked often. It eventually paid off with a 2-0 D2 Soccer District Final victory over Chillicothe.
It was the second straight year the Tigers ended Chillicothe's season in the final.
Unofficially, Marietta out shot the Cavs 16-4.
The match was scoreless through the first half with Chillicothe's Nick Zupi recording 7 saves in the first 40 minutes.
A Marietta goal was disallowed just 11 minutes into the first half. The ruling of a push to the back of a Chillicothe defender kept the game scoreless.
The Tigers broke the ice when Wes Riley's shots was deflected by Zupi, Gabe Seymour aproached the goal for the save kicking it away, but the officials ruled the ball had broken the plane of the goal, making it 1-0. Marietta sealed the win on a penalty kick by Matt Morrison with 3:03 remaining.
Chillicothe only had two serious threats. At 6:55 in the first half, Dalton Bettendorf was called offside with a one-on-one opportunity on goal and Justin Ball sent a shot high over the goal in the final 5 minutes.
Since 2005, Marietta has the advantage in the series, 8-3-2. The Tigers earned their 16th victory and a return trip to the Regional Semi-Final.
For Chillicothe, what began as a slow season caught fire midway and had a strong finish. After a 1-4-2 start, Chillicothe won 9 of their last 13 matches, including a tie and two losses to Marietta.
Cavs Finish Season with 21-18 Win at Logan
Saturday 10-30-2010 3:54am ET
As in most cases this season, when Chillicothe's offense sputtered, the defense came to the rescue.
If the defense wasn't stopping the opponent, it was setting the offense up to succeed.
The Cavaliers (4-2/4-6) closed out the 2010 season with a 21-18 victory at Logan (3-3/3-7). In their 14-7 win at Gallipolis (10-8-10) the defense forced the Blue Devils into five turnovers, two of which set up the Cavs scores.Much like in the Gallia Academy game, the Chilli D put the offense in position to win at Logan. The Cavs scored first on a Max Corcoran 1 yard run to take the early 7-0 lead with 3:01 left in the first quarter.Logan countered with back to back scores followed by a 40 yard field goal from Derek Montgomery to post an 18-7 score at halftime.
The Cavs came out of the intermission with a different mindset. Logan would get the ball first, with intentions of adding to its 11 point lead. On the kick off, Chillicothe stopped the return at the Logan 11, forcing a punt. After a Cavalier field goal attempt fell short, Chillicothe got the ball back on another defensive stop at the Logan 35. Five plays later, Corcoran hit Brandon Whittaker for a 22-yard touchdown, pulling Chillicothe withing 18-14.Logan fumbled their next two possessions, the last on the most costly at their own 5 yard line. Corcoran punched in the go ahead score with 8:27 remaining on a 1 yard score to make it 21-18.Same story, different outcome? The game resembled last week's loss at Jackson. Chillicothe used its punting game to win the field position battles. Dylan Osborne pinned Logan at its own in the second half. Both starting quarterbacks were knocked out of the game in the final minutes.
The difference was Kelly Long's pass picked off by Jalen Jones to seal the victory. Long had just come into the game for starter Jordan Jurgensmier who was injured on the previous series. It was the fourth Chieftains turnover in the second half. Chillicothe finished ahead of their opponents in the takeaway category with a +11.As a team, Chillicothe managed 159 total yards while surrendering 205 to Logan.Corcoran and Oates played the entire game, despite nursing knee injuries. Corcoran missed practice this week after hurting his knee last week at Jackson and was a game time decision. Oates was shelved for the Jackson game. Chillicothe's win over Logan gave the Cavs a second place SEOAL finish, tied with Gallia Academy. Jackson won the league outright at 6-0 thanks to a 41-18 drubbing of the Blue Devils. Logan finished fourth, Portsmouth fifth followed by Warren and Marietta.
Cavs-Tigers Play for District Title Satruday
Thursday 10-28-2010 7:03am ET
Chillicothe will face Marietta for the Boys Division 2 Soccer District Saturday at Lucasville Valley High School following a 4-0 victory Wednesday night.
It'll be the fourth consecutive season the two teams have met in a season ending battle. Marietta has defeated Chillicothe in overtime in last year's championship game.
First kick Saturday is at 4:00pm.
Marietta earned their title game berth with a 5-1 win over Zane Trace earlier in the evening.
In their Semi-Final battle with Fairfield Union, the Cavs lit up the board first on a goal by Justin Ball at 24:38 in the first half. The score upheld through to the intermission.
Chillicothe got insurance goals by Ben Buchanan (30:55) Jacob Weber (24:36) and Tyler Allen (8:48) and kept the Falcons at bay the rest of the way.
Heart break for Zane Trace
Marietta spotted the Pioneers 1-0 just 3 minutes into the game. Zane Trace was awarded a penalty kick on a handball. Kody Payne found the back of the net at the 37:22 giving Zane Trace a 1-0 lead.
The Pioneers kept the Tigers scoreless until 19:48 on a goal by Marietta's Brennan Uhrig.
The Tigers blew the game open early in the second half as Cole Hamilton and Wes Riley scored on goals just under two minutes apart. The two Tigers combined for another pair of goals to close out the scoring, 5-1 Marietta.
NOTES: 2009 - Marietta 4, Chillicothe 3 OT (District Final) 2008 - Marietta 2, Chillicothe 1 (District Semi-Final) 2007 - Marietta 2, Chillicothe 1 (District Semi-Final) -- Marietta leads the series 7-3-2 since 2005.
