Cavs Fall Short, Lose 15-14 at Jackson
Friday 10-22-2010 11:50pm ET
Close, but no cigar.
While they yielded a number of yards in the first half, the Chillicothe defense held Jackson at bay until the 1:15 mark. Entering the game, the Ironmen offense had been averaging nearly 40 points per game. However, the Cavalier D didn't allow a score until Drew Ervin's 7-yard run just before halftime.
After the intermission, the Cavaliers began a 5-play 53-yard drive from their own 47and pulling within 7-6 on a 42-yard touchdown run by Isaac Beverly. Beverly was moved to tailback, following an injury suffered by Casey Oates this week in practice. A 2-point conversion attempt failed leaving the Cavs a point-shy.
The two sides exchanged punts through the end of the third quarter. The third closed when Jayson Howard sacked quarterback Kip Winchester at the Jackson 1-yard line.
The Cavs began their next possession at the Jackson 48. Max Corcoran completed a pass to get Chillicothe to the 40, then ran inside the 30, and face-mask penalty put Chillicothe inside the Jackson 20.
Chillicothe drove the ball to the Jackson 3, but were pushed back thirteen yards to the 16. Corcoran found Zach Johnson on the corner of the end zone on a 16-yard strike, making it 12-7 for the Cavs' first lead of the game. Corcoran hit Beverly on 2 point conversion to make it 14-7.
Late in the quarter, Winchester suffered a knee injury knocking the quarterback from the game. Ervin was called upon to call the signals and the Jackson offense went to a running attack.
With :58 remaining, Klay Arthur ran 3 yards to pull Jackson within one and then scored the go-ahead points on a 2-point conversion, 15-14.
Arthur led all rushers with 157 yards on 31 carries. 118 of those yards came in the first half, but Chillicothe's defense held him in check, allowing just 39 second-half yards.
Beverly led the Cavalier attack with 59 of their total 134 yards.
Jackson improves to (5-0) in the SEOAL, while the Cavaliers slip to (3-2) in league play. Chillicothe finishes the regular season at Logan Friday.
