Week Recap: Sotball Program Gets Long-Awaited Win
Saturday 04-03-2010 1:11pm ET
A few years ago, Chillicothe City Schools were forced to eliminate its spring sports program due to system-wide budget cuts. Since that period, it's been tough sledding for Chillicothe's programs to bounce back. Softball made a turn Friday when the Lady Cavs gained an 8-2 victory in a battle at the Annex with Paint Valley. The night before, Chillicothe fell short at Huntington 11-10. Congratulations to Coach Greg Phillips and his Cavs on enjoying the long-awaited taste of victory.
Baseball continues their search for a win. After dropping a close game to Adena to start the week, the Cavs slipped to 0-4 falling to Zane Trace, Huntington and Friday to former OCC foe Olentangy.
Both Baseball and Softball play Marietta Saturday.
The Boys Tennis team's opener had been Washington Court House postponed and then Miami Trace canceled, but finally the Cavs got their season underway with a 5-0 sweep of Athens Friday. John Lods, Gabe Seymour and Grant Markley picked up singles wins while doubles teams of Tyler Allen-Justin Ball and Dallin Patino-Nathan Schoonmaker were victorious.

The Cavaliers will host Zane Trace in their home opener at Ron Hansel Field this afternoon at 5pm.
The Chillicothe Girls continue their search for their first softball victory after falling to Adena in a 6-inning 10-0 loss. The Lady Cavs have their home opener today with Zane Trace in the Annex.

Cavs Ready to Take the Track
Friday 03-26-2010 7:02am ET
Boys Team:
The Cavaliers lose stand-out thrower Curt Smith to graduation, but Coach Pat Laughlin says he has Lance Gilbert, Josh Garrett, JT Gray, and Rob DeFino all looking to compete in throws this year. In other field events, the Cavaliers will have Brandon Whittaker in the long jump, Malik London in the high jump, and Christian Payne and Adam Bixler in the pole vault. Laughlin says 3 of the 4 runners in last year’s 4x4 return, so he looks for that to be a strong relay for them. He also says they have a strong sprinting team. “I think we have more experience in our sprints, so that’s probably our strongest, but we’ve got a lot of young guys who are working hard in our distance, ” said Laughlin.

Isaac Beverly, Casey Oates, Troy Netter, Dylan Osborne, and Michael Turner will run in the sprints.
Junior Cameron Lowe will lead the distance team of Dalton Bettendorf, Jacob Scharfetter, Paul Horning, Nils Peterson, and Arioch Parker.

Girls Team:
Coach Steve Semancik says his team's specialty this year is field events. Erin Barnes and Audra Metzler will compete in the long jump, while Monique Lee and Whitney Harewood are the team’s top throwers. Barnes and Metzler placed in the State Indoor Track meet in the triple jump and long jump, respectively. Coming back to vault for Chillicothe are Ashlyn Howie and Kirstie Coleman. Megan Osborne, Metzler, Emelie Kemper will lead up the sprints. Additionally, Semancik says he has a few young athletes he is still trying to figure out where to place within the sprint events.

The distance crew will be led up by Hannah McCorkle and Brianna Cahill. Semancik says he has high expectations for his team. “I think the girls should be competing for a league title. We’ve got a lot of depth and quality coming back.” Chillicothe lost Megan Martin, Mia Lansford, and Jasmine Vinson to graduation.

Baseball Cavaliers Return to Ron Hansel Field
Friday 03-26-2010 7:04am ET
The Cavaliers, who had an undefeated league record last year (12-0), graduate All-SEOAL South POY Seth Dawes to graduation, as well as All-League players Alex Grow and Derrick Webb. Returning is second baseman Marty Dunn, who was All-SEOAL in 2009. Coach Marty Dunn says Nathan Winston, Joey Davis, Corey Demick, and Scottie Perkins will chip in on the mound this year, with Shay Netter and Knute Bonner sharing catching duties.
Perkins, who enrolled into the district this year, will also see time at shortstop. Chris Claytor, Davis, Ian Dennis, and Demick will play in the infield, with Josh Sulzer, Ryan Bouillon, Tyler Holtz, and Ronnie Mango in the grass. Offensively, the Cavs will look to Dunn, Holtz, S. Netter, Sulzer, and Bouillon to put runs on the board. “We’re a team that I think we have a little better than average speed, and I think we’re a team that can put the ball into play; and when you are able to do that, you can put some pressure on the defense and be able to score some runs.” Dunn says he has high expectations for his team. “With all of my teams, even last year,… the thing we want to do is to be better each and every day, each and every game, and let the chips fall where they may.”

Softball Team Looking for Elusive Victory
Friday 03-26-2010 7:06am ET
The Lady Cavaliers finished at (0-26) in 2009, but Coach Greg Phillips hopes to see that turn around this year. In 2006, Chillicothe suspended its spring sports programs after a failed levy, which prompted some students to transfer to other schools, which Phillips says hurt the softball program in the long run. “They think you just lose the girls that year for that team, but … you lose those families,” Phillips said.
Phillips will be fielding a young team this year, with freshmen and sophomores combining for 9 of the 11 varsity players. “We’re still looking with an eye to the future, and this year’s just going to be a time when I think these girls are really going to know that this group of sophomores and freshmen and even our juniors are going to be together for two and three and we’re looking for special things down the road.” The Cavaliers lost 5 players to graduation in Amber Miller, Britney Steinbrook, Taylor Good, Hannah Lloyd, and Venessa Montgomery. This year, Holly LeMay will start at first, Marissa Webb will play at third, and Karol Ojeda will catch. Sasha Johnson and Paige Rinehart will see infield playing time, as well. Maranda Bliss is starting in left field, with Kalie Kight in center and Maddie Glendening in right. Phillips says Jordan Webb and Rylee Buillion will rotate between the mound and shortstop. “These girls have been basically been doing softball open gym since September, and these girls have been pitching and pitching and pitching. Their arms are loose, they’re ready to go, and their itching to get after it.”
