Veris New Cavs AD, Breth New Girls Soccer Coach
Saturday 07-16-2011 10:59am ET
Three vacancies were filled at a special meeting of the Chillicothe City School Board Saturday morning.
The most recognizable was that of Garin Veris as the new high school director of athletics. Also approved by the board, Quincey Gray as principal for Tiffin Elementary and new head coach for Girls Soccer, Zach Breth.
Gray comes to Chillicothe from Miami Trace Local Schools where she was the curriculum director. Breth, a Chillicothe graduate, was hired as a supplemental contract.
For Veris, duties will also include At Risk Student Coordinator. The former NFL player says he's excited to get back to working with troubled kids, something he has done for the City of Boston and other communities he's lived since leaving Chillicothe in 1981.
"Chillicothe is not that level of number of people (Boston) but kids are still going through the same things and I feel that my background will lend them a helping hand and hopefully get them on track if they're off track and make sure they're doing the things they need to be successful in life."
As for heading up the athletic department, Veris adds before he took a similar position at a high school in Massachusetts, he tapped into the experience of his former coach and long time CHS athletic director Tom Cuppett.
"He passed along all of his administrative information to me... I look back on it and he was the most prepared coach I ever played for, and that was done in high school. To learn from a man I truly respect and now be in a position that he was once in I want to do good things and make sure kids enjoy their time at CHS participating in athletics and hopefully they make the grade in the classroom. And this is just the start for them, that they go on the college and be productive citizens and have great families, I want to see all of that."
Veris will get to work right away. Will the date of hire is August 1st for all three, the board approved an extension of eight days so Veris could get right to work. Veris fills the vacancy left by the death of Rey Bradley in March of this year.
High School Principal Jeff Fisher says "He's coming home.... to give back to the community and give back to the high school that did so much for him. His administrative experience through the athletic departments at the collegiate level and the high school level just made him such an attractive candidate."
Fisher describes Breth as a "passionate Chillicothe graduate, Chillicothe resident... he's talented, he's driven, he's going to do great things for us."

Season Ends For Chillicothe Softball
Thursday 05-12-2011 9:47pm ET
The season came to an end for the Chillicothe Lady Cavalier softball team, falling to Jackson in the Sectional Semi Finals 2-1 on Thursday. Chillicothe got on the board first in the 4th inning as Chi Smitely drove in Karol Ojeda to give the Cavs a 1-0 lead. The score remained the same until the bottom of the 5th inning as Jackson tied the score 1-1. Another Jackson run in the 6th made it 2-1. Chillicothe was unable to comeback in the 7th inning and suffer the tough loss 2-1. The Cavaliers finish the year with a 6-12 record, and Coach Greg Phillips says the future is looking bright for the Cavaliers as they will have nearly everyone back, including pitcher Riley Bouillion. Along with that, some good players are coming up through the Junior High ranks and could contribute next year for the Lady Cavs. The Cavs will be losing two seniors, Brenda Detty and 4 year Varsity member Karold OJeda.
