Chillicothe's Dan Demick scored a sixth-place finish in the heavyweight division for The College of Notre Dame at the Edinboro Open two weekends ago. Now, the former Cavalier heads into the National Collegiate Wrestling Association North Central Conference tournament in Edwardsville, Illinois.
His last time out, Demick went 5-3 en route to earning his seventh top-6 finish in his collegiate debut season. The 2010 CHS graduate dispatched three NCAA-I foes on the day, including a 4-2 decision over Ohio State's Orry Elor who had downed Demick twice at the Jan. 28 Simonson Open.
This Saturday's tournament includes collegiate teams not currently sanctioned for postseason competition in the NCAA or NAIA.
Freshman heavyweight Dan Demick is 18-14 in 32 collegiate bouts this season. He has placed in 7-of-8 tournaments entered this season and has pinned five foes. Demick placed first in the Grand Valley (Mich.) Wrestling Club-hosted Laker Classic on Feb. 5 and is 12-6 over his last 18 matches.
Chillicothe's Hannah Day had 13 points in Otterbein College's 63-61 victory over Wilmington in the regualr season finale Saturday.
Otterbein will host their first game in the Ohio Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Tournament this Tuesday. The Lady Cardinals are the #3 seed in the OAC.
Jacob Price and Cristian Collins earned spots in next week's District Wrestling tournament as the Cavs placed 8th as a team at Athens High School Saturday.
Price finished 3rd in the 132 class with an 8-1 decision over Gallia Academy's Blake Wilson. Collins finished 4th in the 152 class after losing a 3-2 decision to Vinton County's Shawn Bunnel.
The top four wrestlers in each class advanced to the District Meet at Goshen High School next weekend.
Finishing in the top six for Chillicothe, Caleb Price (5th, 126 class) with a pin of Fairland's J.C. Falks in 3:17, Trevan Pennington (6th, 182 class) suffering a pin in 2:08 to Athens' Trevor Sorrell and Tom Dunn (6th, 285 class) in a pin by Athens' John Keifer in 4:30.
Athens won the tournament by just a point-and-a-half ahead of Sheridan. Gallia Academy was third.
The Chillicothe Relay teams had their season end in the District at Ohio State Saturday.
The Lady Cavs team of Kassie Stewart, Lexie Mettler, Clare Gucwa and Hannah Mowery had their best time of the season, but finished 25th.
Meanwhile the Boys team of David Masters, Lander Zook, Dominic Villarreal and Per Petersen place 28th.
Teays Valley shut down Chillicothe's Lady Cavs in the first
quarter of play and never looked back en route to a 68-25 win in the first round of tournament play,
The Lady Vikings used both an up-tempo pace and a height advantage to lead 18-0 after the first period as
the Cavs had trouble finding the basket. Chillicothe was 0-12 from the field in the first eight minutes.
Coach Shawn Blue said after the game he thought nerves may have played a part in the slow start for his team “All the inexperience we’ve had the last couple of years with our freshman kids, I think they were just a little bit in awe of Teays Valley
because they’re big and strong, and they put all kinds of pressure on us.”
Trying to break that press led to the loss of Jenna Holton, who reinjured her right knee while attempting a
sideline pass on a press breaker. Holton’s game ending injury came with 6:28 left in the second period less than 30 seconds after Kayla Keener had made the Cavs’ first basket of the game.
Chillicothe trailed 33-9 at halftime, managing just 2 of 19 shots while the Vikings were running away.
Teays Valley made 8 three-pointers to the Cavs’ eight total field goals.
“We got in a hole early and then we lost Jenna… we did get a lot of experience, you go from zero wins to nine, so that’s a huge step. Ten of the girls are freshmen of the 16 we have… we’re still building at Chillicothe.”
While noting the youth in the Cavs program, Blue praised the efforts of his senior class and the character they played with all season long.
The Vikings’ Caitlin Cain
led all scorers with 20 points and Shelby battle added another 12 and Brooklyn
Wooten had 10 as Teays Valley shot 25 for 50 from the field and hit 10 of 18
The Lady Vikings (15-6)
advance to face state ranked Columbus Northland, a 92-14 winner over Columbus Briggs in the Division 1 Central District second round Wednesday night at Pickerington Central High School.
Chillicothe (9-12) graduates five seniors in Alyssa Oates, Mindy Williams, Kaylee Wright, Sheyanne Helton, and Sam Claytor.
