Pressure can make a big difference in a game. Saturday night, Logan (2-3/1-0) used it to gain the edge in a 60-47 Chieftains win over Chillicothe (2-2/0-1).
Using a full and three-quarter press, Logan turned a 14-10 1st quarter advantage
into a 27-13 lead in the second. A turnover-prone Cavalier team showed signs of improvement, but had difficulty eliminating their Achilles heel.
“We’ve got to make a change” said Cavs coach Shawn Blue. “We’ve got to do a better job (of ball control) and I’ve got to put the girls in better situations.”
Chillicothe had 30 turnovers last Saturday against Athens and 33 in their in over Groveport Tuesday and tallied 27 against Logan, eight more than their opponent.
The Cavs rallied back from their 14 point deficit in the third quarter. Nashayia Lett, playing in her first game with Chilllicothe this season, teamed with Jenna Holton, Kayla Keener and Jasmine Jordan to pull the Cavs to within 30-26, followed by a three-point basket by Bri Dawes to whittle Logan’s lead to 30-29 with 2:50 remaining in the third quarter.
Logan’s Pat Walsh had put his team into zone coverage up to that point, and then had seen enough. Back to the pressure at mid floor and three quick baskets by Abbie Hughes, Jaclyn McNeal and Chloe Dietzler and the Cavs were down 39-31 through three.
The difference could easily be pointed in two areas, the multiple turnovers and the amount of free throws. Logan made 13 of 20 shots from the line to Chillicothe’s four attempts. The Cavs shot 45% as a team with one less field goal than the Lady Chiefs.
“It was a physical game… we’re gonna half to get tougher” said Blue, whose team has six days to prepare for Jackson, next Saturday.
The Cavs had a scare in the second quarter when Jenna Holton twisted the knee she injured in Chillicothe’s final game last February. Holton was helped to the training room and managed to return to the game in the second half.
Holton led Chillicothe with 13 points, Bri Dawes scored 11 and Nashayia Lett added 10. Paige Davis had 13 to lead Logan and Taylor Myers scored 10.
