CIRCLEVILLE 44, CAVS 32:
Number-1 seeded Circleville jumped out to a 28-0 lead on Chillicothe and held on for a 44-27 victory in their Round 2 Dual State Meet Wednesday.
Chillicothe match winners included Jacob Price (138), Jacob Johansen (145), Christian Collins (160), Trevan Bond-Pennington (195), Tyler Kelley (220) and Tyler Howard (285).
Coach Mike Peck said Price’s win in the 138 class was over a state alternate from 2012. “The match came down to the 3rd period, with Price taking over and getting the takedowns to secure the win.”
Chillicothe was wrestling without a few normal starters out of the lineup and bumped kids around to cover all the weight classes.
Peck added “Wrestling up to 220 pound and giving up 35 pounds (to do so), Tyler Kelley came up with the 7-4 victory. Tyler is a true team captain\leader and always puts the team first by wrestling any where he is needed.”
The Cavs plan to bounce back this weekend at the 21 team Athens John Deon Invitational.
“This should be a good test gearing up for league and sectionals” said Peck.
IRONTON 51, CAVS 32:
The Lady Cavs got the opening basket of the game, but then went cold as
Ironton earned a 51-32 victory over their former SEOAL foe.
Chillicothe fell behind 12-3 after the 1st quarter and Coach Shawn Blue said the girls simply couldn’t catch up. “Our shooting was about as cold as the weather last night. We just could buy a basket in the first quarter… the first half.”
The Cavs trailed 25-9 at the half.
“We defended pretty well and got lots of stops, but just couldn’t put the ball in the hole” said Blue.
Jasmine Jordan grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds for Chillicothe.
The Cavs (5-12) will host Warren Saturday and will have four more games over the next seven days. After Warren, Chillicothe heads to Nelsonville-York Monday, hosts East Clinton Wednesday and travels to Gallia Academy next Saturday (2/9).
Chillicothe will play in the GIrls Division 1 tournament in the 42 team Central District this season. The tournament draw is this Sunday afternoon.
