Thursday 12-10-2009 8:39am ET
The Lady Cavs dropped a 44-24 decision at Bishop Watterson Wednesday night.

Coach Shawn Blue said Watterson out-sized his Cavaliers, but was pleased with Chillicothe's rebounding effort in a very physical game.

Offensively, Chillicothe couldn't get to the free throw line. The Cavs had just one attempt which didn't come until the game's final 30 seconds.

Watterson took a 7-4 first quarter lead and expanded that lead to 21-12 by halftime. Most of the damage was done in the second and third periods when Watterson outscored the Cavs 28-13.

Mariah Smith led the Cavs with 8 points (all in the first half).

Coming off a loss at home to Zane Trace, the Lady Cavs boarded the bus early Saturday for a road trip to Ironton.

The came home with a 49-45 overtime victory and a good start for league play.

Monique Lee fouled out of the game with 2:30 remaining in the extra period. With Lee on the bench, Mariah Smith, Holly Casto-Lemay and Whitney Harewood took charge. Smith hit two quick baskets to allow the Cavs time to work the clock. Ironton forced Chillicothe to hit the free throw line and the Cavs iced the game, making 7-of-9 shots.

Both teams fought to an 8-8 tie through the first period while the Tigers took a 16-15 lead at the half.

In the third, Ironton held a 28-26 lead, but Chillicothe scrapped back. The Cavs had a 38-36 lead before Ironton's Lorna Ceasar hit a shot with 17 seconds remaining to tie and force the overtime.

Coach Shawn Blue credited Harewood's efforts at the point and added the Cavs "had a great 4th quarter and overtime".

Harewood and Smith lead the Cavs with 13 points each and Casto-Lemay chipped in 11.

The Cavs (2-1, 1-0 SEOAL) head to Watterson next Wednesday.

Zane Trace Earns 50-42 Win at CHS
Friday 12-04-2009 12:26am ET

Zane Trace overcame a Chillicothe comeback for a 50-42 win Thursday night.

The Pioneers led for most of the game until the Cavs Whitney Harewood hit a bucket with 4:38 remaining in the third period for Chillicothe's first lead of the game.

The Cavs kept pace with the ZT attack, 10-7 through the first 8 minutes of play, but saw the Pioneers cruise to a 21-11 lead by halftime.

Monique Lee was the only Lady Cavalier able to find the bottom of the basket, scoring all 11 of Chillicothe's points.

The Pioneers' Jessica Roepke led all scorers with 25 points, getting 11 by intermission.

Chillicothe's adjustments at the half fueled a 14-3 run and created 12 Zane Trace turnovers in the third quarter. Meanwhile, the Cavs blistered the nets hitting 6 of their initial 8 shots of the half. Chillicothe held a 33-26 lead before a Pioneer run to close the quarter at 33-32.

The Lady Cavs comeback hit a wall in to start the final period. Playing with three fouls, Mariah Smith's night ended quickly. Smith, defending Roepke on a rebound, suffered a personal and technical foul on the same play, disqualifying the 5'11" center for the remainder of the game. Roepke sank four straight free throws and the game's momentum rolled with the Pioneers. A one point Chillicothe lead soon became a 13 point deficit.

The Cavs managed to cut the margin to 48-42 in the final 90 seconds, and nearly three points, but a Lee jumper from long range fell wide and the Pioneers held on for the win.

Zane Trace made the most of their trips to the free throw line, connecting on 17 of 23 shots. Chillicothe made 5 of 8.

The Cavs slipped to 1-1 and will open SEOAL play Saturday with Ironton.

Zane Trace is 2-0 overall and prepares for a Saturday match with Alexander in the Zane Trace Tip-Off Classic.
