When the chief of police in Laurelville had an early morning craving for cake, he decided to eat a piece left on the counter at his home. What he didn't know is that it had been laced with a half-cup of cannibas oil, which containsTHC, the chemical in marijuana that gives you the high.
Mike Berkemeier had just visited one daughter in the hospital from a car crash and was hungry when he got home. Not long after finishing off the cake, he started feeling odd.
"I thought I was going to die. I really did," Berkemeier said.
He didn't know what was happening or if he had been poisoned, so he drove himself to the police station where he was met by medics. It's a drive he doesn't remember and regrets making.
"I could have killed myself; I could have killed someone else. It was horrible," he said.
Medics rushed him to Berger Hospital in Circleville where he spent the next day and a half recovering.
It turns out the cake had been brought to Berkemeier's home by the boyfriend of his daughter's friend. Berkemeier says the boy is an alleged drug user and dealer in the area. There was nothing suspicious looking about the cake or the container it was in. Berkemeier thought it had been made by his daughter.
"I hope the proper charges are filed and the person who did this to me is held accountable," he said.
Prosecutors are reviewing the case.
