Ross County Sheriff George Lavender reports his office was called to the Paint Creek State Park Camping Area located on Taylor Road outside of Bainbridge, in reference to a suspicious package at approximately 9:50am on Sunday morning.
Deputies arrived on the scene and found it to be a metal cylinder approximately 12"-long with caps on both ends.
The Ross County Sheriff’s Office immediately dispatched their explosives detection K-9 Ilka along with handler Deputy Rick Torchick who conducted a sweep of the campgrounds to ensure the safety of the campers.
The Columbus Fire Department Bomb Squad was requested to the scene. Upon their arrival they were able to safely neutralize the package.
The device was taken into evidence and will be sent to the laboratory for testing.
Several agencies are still currently on the scene conducting this investigation.
Sheriff Lavender thanked all of the numerous agencies who assisted with this incident, and the members of the community for their patience while the campground was being checked.
Further details will be released as they become available.
