The Zane Trace Pioneers defense did something Friday that few football teams have been able to do this fall, shut-down the Huntington Huntsmen offense.
Entering Friday's game, Huntington was the top scoring offense in the SVC at 35 points per game, but Zane Trace held the Huntsmen to only 108 total yards in a 14-6 victory. Huntington's lone score came on a 79 yard punt return by David Shoemaker at 3:47 left in the third quarter.
Zane Trace took a 7-0 lead on the third play for scrimmage on a Nate Mettler 26 yard TD run to cap-off a 3 play/70 yard drive.
Huntington came right back on two plays to get inside the ZT 10 yard line, only the fumble the ball away. Huntington had three turnovers on the night for two for the Pioneers.
After Huntington scored on the punt return, but failed to connect on the PAT, Zane later made it 14-6 on a 64 yard, 6 play drive when Tyler Hinty connected with Zach Walker on a 32 yard TD pass. Conner Smith hit both PAT's for ZT on the night.
Zane Trace compiled 456 total yards with 334 on the ground. Colin Swackhammer rushed for 163 yards on 22 carries. Tyler Hinty was 6/12 passing for 122 yards, while Brice Vickers of Huntington was 8/18 for only 57 yards.
The Pioneers had 20 first downs for the game, Huntington had only 5.
Zane Trace improves to (2-2/3-4) and Huntington drops to (2-2/4-3).
