Three turnovers and two defensive stops inside the ten yard line propelled Westfall (5-2/5-5) to a 39-7 victory over Adena (4-3/ 5-5) Friday night, and a share of the SVC Championship.
They share the title at (5-2) with Paint Valley, who beat Huntington 49-16 and Zane Trace, who topped Unioto 28-21. It is the first tri-championship in the SVC since 1996 and only the second in SVC Football history.
Westfall 39, Adena 7
For Westfall, after forcing a fumble on Adena’s opening drive, Westfall scored on a four play drive capped off by a ten yard Taylor Salmons run to take a 6-0 lead. Adena was able to drive the ball down the field on their ensuing possession, only to miss a 22 yard field goal, when Westfall forced a fourth and goal from the five yard line.
Westfall then marched down the field on eleven plays scoring on a nine yard touchdown run from Taylor Salmons putting the Mustangs up 12-0. Westfall added one more touchdown before the half, on a two play, sixty-five yard drive, finished with a ten yard Taylor Salmons run, that only took thirty seconds off the clock.
Adena finally got on the board on the opening possession of the second half. The Warriors took the ball sixty-eight yards on seven plays, with Mike Crispen scoring from two yards out, to make the score 18-7.
Westfall stretched their lead to 32-7 on a twenty yard touchdown pass from Cole Hardin to Tommy Staten to make the score 26-7.
Following an interception by Hunter Fast, Westfall scored again on a five yard touchdown run by Alphonso Rice to make the score 32-7.
Tommy Staten finished the scoring with a seventy yard interception return for a touchdown, off a Cade Harper pass, making the final score 39-7.
For the Mustangs, Taylor Salmons led the way with 114 yards on 19 carries, adding three touchdowns on the ground. Cole Harding threw for 312 yards on the night and one touchdown.
For Adena, Cale Free carried the ball 18 times for 78 yards. Cade Harper was 7/17 for 67 yards.
Zane Trace 28, Unioto 21
The Pioneers got their share of the title in a see-saw affair with the Shermans, which came down to the closing seconds.
The score was tied at 21-21 after a Curtis Strange 80 yard run, when ZT came right back with a long run by Trey Rittenhouse, that set-up a 7-year TD run by Trey Davis for the go-ahead TD and the win.
Rittenhouse rushed for over 200 yards rushing as the Pioneers ground-out 311 for the game and 356 total yards.
Unioto gobbled up 443 total yards with 209 in the air.
Paint Valley 49, Huntington 16
The Bearcats took part in their first SVC title in a decade with their win over rival Huntington for the Maple Leaf Trophy.
Both teams traded scores early for an 8-8 tie, but Paint valley quickly took control of the game enroute to their victory.
Paint Valley is a lock for the Division 7 playoff spot, possibly ending in a #5 spot in their region, which would likely have them traveling to Sidney Lehman in the Regional Quarterfinal next Saturday.
The official pairings will be posted by the OHSAA on Sunday afternoon, where Westfall and Zane Trace could be "on the bubble" for possible playoff spots. Results will be posted on Sunday.
