A dryer spring is helping farmers get into the field earlier than this time last year

Ohio farmers much happier with the weather this year versus last where they were bogged down by endless rain and muddy fields.

The mild weather had farmers in their fields earlier, but the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation's Joe Cornely says it doesn't come without risk. Since we didn't get the bitter cold temperatures we're used to in the winter it could mean more insects.

So far about 2 percent of the state's corn and 42 percent of oats are in the ground. Last year none of the corn and only 4 percent of the oats were planted. A cold snap could hurt small plants, but Cornely says it won't bother seed.
