Soldiers from Pike County will be remembered during a ceremony on October 6th.
A ceremony to dedicate new gravestones for two Pike County Civil War Veterans and a plaque honoring 22 other soldiers will be held on Saturday, October 6th, at 1 p.m.
The 73rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry was organized and mustered in on December 30, 1861, under Colonel Orland Smith at Camp Logan in Chillicothe. Company B of this Regiment was comprised of Pike County men for the most part. Among them were John Double, George Haynes, David R. Lee, David D. Mitten, and Joseph T. Shade.
The Regiment moved to Clarksburg, West Virginia, in February 1862. There, an epidemic of measles and "camp fever" ravaged the camp. Between February 20th and April 8th, twenty-four soldiers of the 73rd died including the afore mentioned Pike County men.
Directions to the October 6th event are to take State Route 23 into Waverly, turn right onto State Route 220, follow out of town, go past the lake and beyond for several miles. Turn right onto State Route 772. Go a mile or so to Frazier Road on the left. Travel up a gravel road until you reach a sign on left.
