Mayor Courts in Jeopardy

A proposed state law would eliminate them in smaller towns

A bill would eliminate mayor's courts in Ohio communities with less than 1,000 people living there. Backers of the bill argue the courts are simply revenue generators.

The perception is that these small community police forces simply exist to write tickets at speed traps.

State Representative Courtney Combs, a Hamilton Republican who introduced the bill, says those tickets are then run through courts run by mayors who many times have no legal experience.

He's confident the house will vote on the measure next week and then quickly get it to the senate to send it to Gov. John Kasich.
