January 13 is in honor of the program and its namesake

The State of Ohio is observing National AMBER Alert Awareness Day today, January 13. This honors the memory of Amber Hagerman of Arlington, Texas, and the establishment of the AMBER Alert Program.

To date, almost 600 children nationwide have been successfully recovered as a result of the AMBER Alert Program.

Ohio’s programs utilize a variety of distribution methods...including the Emergency Alert System (EAS), electronic billboards, lottery terminals, media partnerships, Twitter, Facebook, and others.

AMBER Alerts can only be issued by a law enforcement agency. For other missing child emergencies, there is the "Endangered Missing Child Alert," which uses many of the same public information distribution methods.
