The new center will be located at the former Bainbridge Elementary
A community center for Bainbridge has been a vision since 2011, but now organizers are pushing forward to make it a reality. Bob Richardson, President of Bainbridge Community Center, Inc., said the site will be located at the former Bainbridge School building.
"Youth activities will take place there every week," he said, "We already have a pool table and stuff like that; we'll have the churches helping us in that."
Bainbridge Mayor Rocky Countryman said the youth have responded well to past programs, and the intent of this community center is to make more available to youngsters as well as those of any age.
"Our population is around 860 people at our last census," said Mayor Countryman.
Richardson said they have a total of six 28.5ft x 28.5 foot rooms that are being dedicated to different programs, such as the youth activities, a library, and even an office for the Sheriff.
The project is currently being funded through donations and fundraisers, but organizers are working to get the center into 5013C status so that they can apply for grants as well.
As for a timetable, Richardson said they are working to get the roof repaired and hope to have the center open in July.
"As soon as we get the new roof on, then everything starts gelling together," he said.
