Ross County Coroner Dr. John Gabis was given the 2012 Achievement Award for his "community service and humanitarian deeds".

Ross County Coroner Dr. John Gabis was given the 2012 achievement award for his "community service and humanitarian deeds."  He said wherever he finds himself, he's a part of the community - and can't be just a "halfway part."

In accepting his award, Gabis brought up a major concern of his in the area: opiate drug overdose deaths, along with drug crimes.  He says a coalition is working behind the scenes with both addicts and law enforcement...to help both.

The clergy speaker was Dr. Larry Olson, who has spent many years in Ohio Christian University.

He gave an illustration of the decreasing cooperation in our culture through the lyrics to "Laverne & Shirley" - like the founding of our country, "we did it our way."  But then if you listen to "The Eagles," they sang "you see it your way, I see it mine, and we both see it slippin' away."  Olson said we both lose out if we don't see things the same.

The political speaker was Jean Schmidt, the first woman elected to represent southern Ohio in Congress.  She said she corrected her spiritual life after an inspirational talk and afterward found herself winning a Congressional election...or rather, winning herself back to the Lord.

Schmidt said she was grateful to be invited to give testimony in the Statehood Day Prayer Breakfast.
