The jury found George Black guilty Tuesday in his involuntary manslaughter trial.
George Black was found guilty of causing the death of Bobby Nibert, after driving his pickup truck at Nibert outside the Valley Bar in Bainbridge January 13, 2011. After Nibert's right leg was amputated above the knee, he died in March 2011 because of complications from his injuries.
Ross County Prosecutor Matt Schmidt was pleased with the outcome. Black's bond was revoked and he went straight to jail, to await sentencing in May. The family will prepare victim impact statements that will affect sentencing.
The time Black could serve for the most serious conviction - involuntary manslaughter - is 3 to 10 years on its own.
Schmidt had grilled Black for his testimony on the stand, describing it as a "self-serving fiction."

Defense attorney Benjamin Patee was disappointed, and says they will appeal. Judge Scott Nusbaum denied their request for consideration that Black was the only caretaker of his parents, and Black was immediately jailed.

Friends of victim Bobby Nibert left the courtroom feeling better. Kathy McElwee says she is the eyes and ears for the mother of Nibert, who did not hear the conviction. She felt justice was served.
