The Huntsmen win in four sets at Zane Trace Thursday
The Huntington Volleyball team prevented # 6 state ranked Zane Trace from wrapping-up a share of the SVC crown Thursday, beating the Pioneers 25-21, 25-23, 12-25, 25-18.
The upset keeps both Westfall and Adena still alive in the title hunt, as both of those teams won Thursday to pull to within one match of the conference leaders. (9-3) Westfall swept Unioto 26-24, 25-17, 25-23 while (9-3) Adena swept Southeastern 25-14, 25-9, 25-14.
Zane Trace has another shot at clinching at least a share of the championship, when they host Paint Valley Tuesday.
Huntington led most of the first two sets, building leads of 18-9 in Set #1, before ZT rallied to within 21-19. The Huntsmen then finished off at 25-21.
In Set #2, Huntington held their biggest lead at 16-10, but ZT came back to take a 19-18 lead, before the Huntsmen got a narrow lead back and held on for the 25-23 victory.
Zane Trace controlled Set #3 from the outset in a 25-12 win, but Huntington regained their stride in Set #4, as they never trailed in a 25-18 win for the match.
Huntington's Jackie Kellough set what is believed to be a school record with 37 kills in the match, 25 of which came in the first two sets. Freshman Dylana Gragg added 14 kills and Layne Beasley had 7. Alayna Lytle anchored the Huntington defense with 26 digs while also serving 4 aces, Halie Ingram had 51 assists and 16 digs, Kellough 14 digs and 4 aces, Gragg with 13 and Carlie Long with 10.
Huntington had 9 serving aces, all in the first two sets. Zane Trace had 7.
Zane Trace was led by Hayley Carle's 18 kills and 12 digs, Delaney Spetnagle added 12 kills and 23 digs, while Kylan Strausbaugh had 8 kills and 22 digs. Karah Tillis delivered 17 assists and 13 digs and Alyx Chaffin had 13 digs.
Zane Trace drops to (10-2/17-2) as Huntington improves to (8-4/11-5).
The Pioneers will try again to clinch a share of the SVC championship at home Tuesday against Paint Valley, before going to Adena October 11th for the regular season conclusion.
Westfall and Adena still keep their hopes for a piece of the SVC championship alive, with Westfall finishing league play at home against Piketon Tuesday and traveling to Huntington on October 11th. Adena plays at Unioto Tuesday and hosts Zane Trace on October 11th.
