Piketon rallies from 12 point deficit to win 71-66 and grab first place tie with Zane Trace
There is a first place tie between Piketon and Zane Trace in SVC boys basketball, after the Redstreaks beat the Pioneers 71-66 in overtime at ZT Friday. That coupled with Unioto's 52-45 upset loss at Adena, prevents the Shermans from sharing the top spot- dropping to (4-2) in the SVC.
Friday's "barn-burner" at Zane Trace saw both teams rally from double-digit deficits. Piketon had leads of 14-4 and 31-21 in the first half, and were up 31-23 at halftime. That's when Zane Trace exploded in the third quarter, going on a 24-5 run for a 47-36 lead after three quarters. Just prior to the end of the quarter, the Pioneers had built their biggest lead of 47-35.
Piketon then surged back in the fourth quarter, shooting 9/20 from the field as ZT connected on 3/5. The Pioneers committed two offensive fouls in the closing 16 seconds that cost them the win in regulation. Leading 58-55 and with the ball on an out-of-bounds play, freshman Pierce Mowery fouled out of the game, giving Piketon the ball, where Zach Farmer connected on a three-pointer at the top of the key to even the score 58-58. Another offensive foul on Nate Mettler on the inbound, gave the ball back to the Redstreaks with a chance to win in regulation, but Isaac Brabson missed a shot sending it to overtime.
In the extra period, Piketon blistered the nets at 5/6 for 80% while ZT shot only 2/6.
For the game, Piketon was 28/69 from the field- including 4/10 from the arc for 41% and were only 11/23 from the charity stripe.
Zane Trace was 27/52 from the field- including 3/15 from the arc for 52% and were 9/16 at the foul line.
Piketon only committed 5 turnovers, while Zane Trace had 16. ZT won the rebounding battle 40-33.
Both teams had four players in double figures. Piketon was led by Zach Farmer's 17 points/7 rebounds, Craigen Moore added 14 points- with 10 in the second half, Colten Williams had 11 points/6 rebounds before leaving the game with a shoulder injury in the closing two minutes of regulation. Isaac Brabson scored 10 points.
Zane Trace was led by Wes Beam's 21 points/15 rebounds/2 blocked shots. Connor Smith pitched-in 14 points/7 rebounds, Tyler Hinty with 11 points and Pierce Mowery 10 points.
Piketon now stands at (5-1/8-2) and Zane Trace (5-1/7-2), with Unioto trailing by one game in the SVC standings.
