Cavs Track Star makes it official at a signing ceremony at CHS.
It’s only fitting.
In Megan Osborne, Penn State will be getting a sprinter with the heart if a lion.
Jane Osborne told a gathering of friends and family at her daughter’s national letter of intent signing Wednesday afternoon, “Her new coach at Penn State hadn’t got to see her run… until last week”. Osborne ran in an invitational in Geneva, Ohio last weekend.
While that may seem odd, so many decisions are made by having seen video these days. But Osborne added “He said, ‘She’s got heart, and that’s what I want’.”
Osborne, enters her senior track season next month, the holder of four school records… three of which she has broken numerous times in her high school career. Nationally, she’s ranked 9th in the 200 Meter Dash.
Not bad for a kid whose high school coach used to refer to her as ‘middle schooler’. CHS Girls Track Coach Steve Semancik explained Osborne would practice with the high school team during her time at CMS. Semancik told the audience the words that hit him the most came last summer after Osborne had placed at a national outdoor meet in which she achieved
All-American status. “She came off the track and said ‘We did it’” to which the Cavs coach beamed “No, you did it”.
“Crazy and surreal” said Osborne in describing the recruiting experience. “It’s exciting, but it doesn’t feel real.”
Getting ready for the spring season means getting outside in the winter weather, which in State College, PA will be similar to home. “I don’t think anyone enjoys running in our weather.” Osborne was also considering Arizona State University. She said in her thank you letter to the Sun Devils coach she jokingly said “Every time it snows, I will think of you” and that the outdoor climate is the only regrettable thing about her decision. But smiling, you could tell she was really excited to be running in Happy Valley.
This time next year will be a big time for the incoming freshman as Penn State will be running in the Millrose Games in New York. On Osborne’s immediate horizon will be the Cavs Fair Weather Relays coming in March to open the 2013 season.
Osborne says she’s waiting on determining a major for her studies, but thinks it may be in the sports medicine or rehabilitation field.
