While the Mustangs were beating Piketon, Adena upset Unioto in five sets
The Westfall Mustangs have grabbed no worse than a share of their first SVC volleyball championship since 2004, with the combination of a three-set win over Piketon along with Adena's upset win over red-hot Unioto.
(11-1) Westfall traveled to (4-8) Piketon, where they won in straight sets, 25-16, 28-26, 25-17.
Along with the Mustangs win, Adena avenged an earlier season four-set loss at Unioto, winning at home in five sets 25-18, 25-18, 23-25, 17-25, 15-7.
The (8-4) Warriors capitalized on an uncharacteristic number of Unioto hitting and passing errors, while Adena picked up their own attack and defensive game for the victory. Unioto falls into a second place tie with Zane Trace at (9-3) in the SVC, after the Pioneers beat Paint Valley.
The only way either Unioto or Zane Trace can share the crown, is if Westfall loses to both Huntington and Adena, while the Pioneers and Shermans would have to win their last two. Adena plays at Zane Trace Tuesday and hosts Westfall Thursday, Unioto has Paint Valley and Southeastern remaining and Zane Trace has the Warriors and Piketon left.
That combination hands Westfall at least a share of the SVC championship. The Mustangs can win the crown outright Tuesday, when they host Huntington. That match will be broadcast on 94 Country WKKJ with airtime at approximately 6pm.
