Unioto, Westfall, Adena and Eastern Pike win district titles, while Huntington falls in thriller.
Four area high school volleyball teams claimed district championships Saturday in Division 2, 3 and 4.
(22-4) Unioto over (24-2) Athens 25-19, 25-22, 20-25, 25-20
The Division 2 District Championship at Southeastern High School belongs to the (22-4) Unioto Shermans, as they handed top seed Athens only their second loss of the season.
The Shermans came out firing on all cylinders as they controlled the first set for a 25-19 victory.
Athens bounced back to take an early 11-6 lead in Set #2, then saw Unioto battle back and what became a see-saw affair before the Shermans held-on for a 25-22 decision.
The Bulldogs got into the winning column with a 25-20 decision in Set #3, but the Shermans got the better of Athens in Set #4 for the match win.
Unioto was led by twin sisters Taylor and Alexis Overly with 19 and 18 kills respectively, combined with Halle White's 14 kills. Mckenna Steinbrook distributed 29 assists and Alexis Overly added 20. Alexis Overly also contributed 22 digs and Emily Ward with 17.
The Shermans now advance to the Wilmington High School regional Semis Thursday against Cincinnati McNicholas. 94 Country WKKJ and IHeart Radio will broadcast the match.
Alexander beat (13-10) Huntington 18-25, 25-19, 25-17, 15-25, 15-13
The (13-10) Huntsmen lost the heart breaker of the day, falling in five sets to Alexander in the Division 3 District Final at Waverly High School.
After a slow start, trailing 5-1 in Set #1, Huntington got back into the match, trading leads until late, with Alexander up 18-17. Huntington then went on a 8-0 run to finish 25-18.
Missed opportunities in Set #2 would later come back to haunt the Huntsmen. The set was tied at 10-10, then the Spartans grabbed the lead and never trailed again, breaking open the set for a 25-19 win to even the match at 1-1.
Set #3 was back-and-forth early, before Alexander closed on a 20-12 run for a 25-17 win and a 2-1 lead.
Huntington jumped to a big lead in Set #4 of 5-0 and 10-1 and was never in trouble en route to a 25-15 match tying win.
Set #5 was a classic, with neither team getting a lead of more than three points. Back and forth rallies to lasted seemingly forever. The Set was tied at 9-9, but Alexander would go on a 5-2 run for a 14-11 lead. The Huntsmen got a couple of service aces to cut it to 14-13, but could not close it out falling 15-13.
Alexander was propelled by Sidney Arnold's 15 kills, followed by 9 from Jala mace and 8 from Carrie Nostrant. Kellie Kearns pitched-in four service aces.
Huntington received a huge effort from freshman Rikki Magill's 19 kills, 26 digs and 5 aces. Dylana Gragg hammered 16 kills with 17 digs, Allie ray added 12 kills. Senior Halie Ingram had 44 assists and 16 digs, while Alayna Lytle scooped-up 47 digs and had 3 aces.
The Spartans meet Adena in the Logan High School regional Semis Wednesday in the second match that night.
(21-3) Westfall rips (12-9) Minford 25-9, 25-14, 25-13
The (21-3) Mustangs never in jeopardy at any time as they sailed to a straight set victory thanks in-part to 13 serving aces.
Westfall built a lead of 16-4 and never looked back for the 25-9 opening win.
Set #2 started at 5-0 and 10-3, before the Falcons battled back to within 13-9, before the Mustangs surged to the 25-14 decision.
Set #3 was more of the same with a 16-2 start and a 25-13 match win in straight sets.
Amanda Curry pounded 13 kills for Westfall followed by Hannah Phillips and Hannah Wallace with 11 and 9 respectively. Wallace also had 3 solo blocks, with Cassidy Williams and Phillips each with 15 assists. Kayla Tackett led the defense with 12 digs.
(12-9) Minford was led by Jordyn Pennington had 5 kills.
Westfall now meets (24-1) West Lafayette Ridgewood at the Logan Regional Semi Wednesday at 6pm. WKKJ airtime will be 5:45pm.
(19-6) Adena rolls past (15-8) Nelsonville York 25-15, 25-15, 25-8
The ease in which the Warriors beat the #1 seed Buckeyes might have been the surprise of the night as they blistered 12 serving aces and had a big night from Karli Bower with 16 kills. Senior Bridgette Scaggs added 9 kills. Setter Kirsten Dawson had 30 assists, 4 kills and 3 aces. Jenna Hutton was one of three Warriors with double-digit digs with 12. Natalee Jones and Carly Carroll each had 10.
Set #1 started with Adena grabbing leads of 5-1, 15-6, 20-11 and the final of 25-15.
More of the same in Set #2 for another 25-15 win.
Set #3 was Adena 5-0, 7-1 and finished 25-8.
The Warriors improve to (19-6) and now face Alexander in the Logan Regional Semis following the Westfall-Ridgewood match. WKKJ will broadcast.

Waterford beat Portsmouth Notre Dame 25-13, 25-12, 25-16
